Illinois...

Thats what i originally thought too, but im getting 2-3 of these a day and they do have yolks, so....I'm gonna cry if this is what my big beautiful bowling ball lavs are laying.....:hit
I bet they get bigger . I have some that just restarted a week ago and are small like that.. some are full size

@homeschoolin momma
New layers can make small eggs in the beginning. You're just used to getting BIG orp eggs and your CCL pullet eggs happen to be xl. I'm sure they'll get bigger by spring.

I find that year #3 is when my orps lay their BEST eggs. Very large size, shells still thick/strong, & production is high. The younger ones can often be stressed, lay in strange places, or lay pullet eggs. The older birds may have thinner shells or start to slow down in year 4-5. That's why I love my 3 yr olds best.

When do you set eggs for your Spring hatch?
mid/late Feb if you want chicks a little early or March- April

I'm a bit of a hatch-a-holic so I plan to hatch every spring but then have a hard time stopping. This year I hatched March - Oct 27th. I actually put the incubators into storage after "my last hatch" in August, but 3 hens went broody & hatched in Sept & a serama hatched her chicks close to Halloween.
(Do broody hens even count as incubating eggs? It's not like it's always planned....)

Taking another comparison look at my roos tonight.

Lavender Orps:
Mr September cockerel (still shows potential)
vs
Mr Nice Guy (hatched in May or June)

Laced Orps:
Mr Sweetheart (Sept cockerel)
vs.
Mr Wonderful (mature roo - hatched June 2017) still molting

He's got a funny-looking chest with some new feathers growing in.

Mr Wonderful also has some funny-looking feathers currently. The crow collar doesn't help.

The September cockerels do not yet crow.

I also took a few pics of the Sept laced orp pullet. She's only got 2 tail feathers right now. (I think the Sept babies are molting & growing in some adult feathers.)

Look at that sweet face!!!!

such funny curiosity

Of course it was getting darker & snowing when I took these pics, so poor confused girl wanted to run back inside.

So that was the end of my photo shoot tonight.

I did take a pic of my Sept lav orp pullet, but she also ran into the coop in fear of the snow (& moon in the upper left corner)

Leghorn Millie & Schmutz (Smudge's baby) decided to run OUT of the coop to see what was going on.

.... But they quickly changed their minds & wanted back in.
