Illinois...

I was in the coop with my DD washing the walls down while she talked my ear off, about well, EVERYTHING, when all of the sudden we heard rifle fire. Close rifle fire. I poked my head out and saw a coyote tearing off as fast as it could towards the woods and creek. (Towards Mr. Grumpy neighbor) Looked to the house to see my 15 year old standing in the doorway with the rifle aimed. It was very legends of the fall kind of scene. I personally think he grazed the coyote enough to scare it away from us, but not kill it. The rifle isn't powerful enough at that distance (about 100 yards). I don't think we were in any real danger, the coyote was in the garden area which is separately fenced in. DH has one side of the fence peeled back and open right now which is how it got in. I went around after and looked at the tracks. It was about 10 yards away from us.😮 I have a great son.
Can I borrow him? Just till he clears my coyote. :idunno

Meanwhile a mile south

Several coyote tracks, several nights. They haven't tried the coop yet but they did chase a rabbit in the yard.
Near the river they get coyotes here. Likely along the tracks too. I don't ever see signs of them near the house though. They would also have to dig under two seperate fences to get into the chicken run.

You think they'll jump 6ft fences
Not likely. I had that accidentally got into our pasture when our dog chased her into it through the slightly open gate. (couldn't believe she went that direction. It was literally was pushed closed and she had everywhere else to run, but instead chose to body slam it open) But anyhow, in she went and DS and I spent the better part of 20 min. trying to get her out. She wouldn't even go out the way she came in even after we open both gates to their full 6 foot span. She finally opted for some funky gymnastics wall climbing in the corner of the fence. It was quite spectacular. But she sure did struggle. This was back before we had issues with coyote attacks and them eating the babies last spring. Should have shot her, but we didn't. She was young. Live and learn.

Ok my chickening superiors...... I know some of of you suggested a little necking is ok but this makeout session is rough. It looks a little better today. Should I worry? Hes a moody guy but I like him and want him healthy. I wish farm and fleet carried blukote.

I personally would blukote it, but if you don't have it, you could try vetricyn. If you don't have that, you could take some Neosporin and rub it on the spot and then vet wrap the neck for a few days until you can get some blukote. Amazon has it and it's on prime. You should be able to get it in a few days. I find it helps with wound picking from the others.
