Illinois...

Our Welsummer is a very good layer too. (She won Best in Show for egg production in DuPage Co. last summer!) Not a friendly bird, though. My Leghorns are less skittish. Besides eggs, a few good things however are that she's very hawk savvy, gets much of her food free ranging, and has great camouflage.

Skittish do look out for predators

Chick update:
I have my odd family. Black orp chick turned 4 weeks yesterday. She still looks very female with no comb, wattles, or color at all. The serama pullet hatched in October..... but mama MaiMai never seemed to notice or care much about the size difference. Of course now there's no longer a size difference.

Then we have mama Xansie who was put in charge of the one lonely serama chick. She turned 3 weeks old today. Also looks female.

Often serama males have a little hint of comb & wattles by now. This one has none.

Last but not least I let my serama, Sesame, sit on 2 orp eggs. They are due tomorrow. I was going to candle the eggs & was surprised to pull out a broken shell. The other egg was pipped.

Look what I found!

Isn't he adorable! (I'm only saying "he" because my last 3 chicks were female. I gotta hatch a male at some point, right?)

Best shot I could get of Princess (lav orp from @Faraday40 )

Lt Brahmas, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb, with the Cornish X stealing the shot (the Cornish X is the only chicken we hatched. The egg came from @Molpet )

One of our favorites, this is Bear, our Speckled Sussex.

The Cornish X again. We need to name her. Initially we didn't name her after hatch last year because we weren't going to keep a roo is she turned out to be a he and we weren't sure if she would thrive alone. Fortunately, we decided to get ducks just then and the ducklings served as brooder-mates. This hen has always been partial to the ducks since then and will attempt to hang out with the ducks when the opportunity arises.

Our white turkey, she isn't so white anymore (a Calico mix I believe from @Molpet )

Or brown turkey (a narragansett mix I believe, also from @Molpet ). The turkets need names, too. I'm think Dinner and Supper.

There are others, but I didn't manage to get their pics.

The calico is a beauty. Different color scheme than most. Darker..almost a firefall
The brown is a semi colored semi Narragansett...at least that's what I have been told.

I may process them or decide to just keep them. I originally had 4 and was going to process 2 and keep 2. However, 2 died one night out of nowhere. I like having them. They add interest to the flock and haven't showed any signs of aggression towards the chickens.

Talk to @Faraday40 about getting orps. :) not sure if she had developed a jubilee line though.
