Illinois...

These next few days are not going to be kind to any of us. Hopefully harder on us than them. According to my little thermometer/hygrometer it's about 16* and 79% humidity in the coop right now. I just hope it stays that way over night as we drop down sub-zero.

I switched to this waterer and even today (so far) water is not frozen. It took a week for them to learn how to use the side nipples.

I am about an hour west of Chicago, and looking to start raising chickens. I'd like to get day old (or close to) chicks. We'd be interested in getting them in the next month or so. We can only have 5. I was looking for speckled sussex, brahma, or australorps.
My neighbor had good luck with mypetchicken.com
They have a great variety and will do small batch shipping. I do notice though that some chicks will not be available until May. Shipping in our area in March is still a little risky due to the cold.
I thought chick days at F&F are in April? Maybe they are sooner, I tend to avoid going there when there are chicks :D.
I have a speckled sussex and love her. She has a very bright personality. My Brahma is very tame, however she's not a good layer and definitely not an economic eater. Lastly, my first chicken was an Australorp. She was mean as sin to children but I think she was an exception, the breed in general is very nice.
