Illinois...

Millie was broody all winter! She went broody about 5 minutes after laying her first egg and basically lays every day for a few weeks, then goes broody until I break her, then lays every day for a few weeks, then broody jail. I never thought for a split second that she would just NOT be broody. The whole reason we decided to get more chicks was to let her raise them. LOL!!
My Cookie was like that. I attempted to prevent her from going broody for about 6 months before giving up. I found that breaking her was more difficult and took longer than just letting her hatch. Whenever I did break her from sitting on eggs, she really just waited for 3-4 weeks, maybe laid 0-2 eggs then went broody again. All I really did was postpone the hatch. Letting her go through the whole broody cycle was faster. When she finished a few months later, she usually gave me 3-4 weeks of daily eggs - then started the broody cycle all over again.

I was going to suggest this last night!!! My goofy, broken seramas!🤣
Today's it's only Popcorn who is full broody. I removed the real eggs daily. Today she's content with 2 golf balls. I have enough things hatching and don't need any "accidental chicks." If another hen decides to join her soon, we can see. Most broody hens need about 5-7 days of sitting on eggs before they can transfer to chick-raising mode. However I do have a few hens that are more like light switches.

Have you tried setting a broody trap? Set the mood with an irresistible pile of eggs in a darken nest and play soft peeping in the background. (Maybe a chick compilation via Youtube) It's funny because you're the one who can get Spitzhaubens and Legbars to go broody. (You know, those non-broody breeds. :p) I bet shortly AFTER your chicks arrive, about half your bantams will catch broody fever.

I love the "Foster Fluffies" idea!

I'm new (well I spent some time here years ago but now I'm back) and I'm in the north suburbs. I've had chickens before back in California, but this suburb doesn't allow them unless you have two acres, so I was hoping to sneak some "Japanese ground parrots" past the lawn police. I don't have things set up yet but I wanted to meet other folks in the area and share ideas!

My kids would be so excited about getting to play with chicks! They're 8 and 4.
Many people who can't keep chickens end up with quail or seramas. My vote is for the "Japanese ground parrots" :lau :lau They don't take up much space and easier for little hands to hold. Plus they have big personalities and demand to be adored. Quail are just cute and give eggs.

I tried and tried to want chickens enough to fight the village for them... But actually quail are pretty dang cute, even if chicken eggs are easier to use, and it turns out I just love them.

Fortunately our only immediate neighbor is totally on board, so even if he doesn't buy the Japanese ground parrot story he'll cover for us!

We have some very spoiled Japanese ground parrots.
Here's our little house rooster. (No he would never run from my daughter's side. The harness and leash were more for novelty.)

The bantams also get "spa days"

Besides, a Serama is so small, it really can't be counted as a chicken. Maybe 1/3 of a chicken at most.....

Hey, everybody! It's been weeks since I've been on. 3 orps are ready to busy out of my brooder. My garage heater went out the other day and my tiny silkies didn't make it. :( (@Faraday40 please don't be upset with me. I took good care of them, but didn't expect the heater to go out.) I'm looking to get silky chicks again. I tried Farm and Fleet with no luck. Anybody seen silky chicks for sale recently?

Been busy as can be here. I'm exhausted every night mentally, and most nights physically too. The weekends are not long enough either. I did manage to get out and get a meat order from Huffendick Farms - IM really excited for grilling this summer with my 1/4 cow and 1/2 pig. I also managed a little garden work - many seeds are started, but still more to get sowed and we got onions in the ground.

Ducks and chickens are laying plenty of eggs and the drake is mating like it's his job (it is actually).

Well, I hope everybody is doing well. I'll try to check back much sooner this time.

Sounds like life is handing you up and downs, as life does. Glad to see you back, don't get burned out now!

Glad to see you, I was starting to wonder.
Sorry about the heater going out. Those things happen. This is one reason I don't want silkies, too delicate.

:hugsSorry about the chick losses. Congrats on the beef and pork. My yard is too swampy to plant, so you're ahead of me.
