Illinois...

Story time: My husband has been dealing with what he thought was allergies and hay fever. His eye were red, itchy, sometimes a little crusty in the morning. Yesterday morning he had enough and asked me to call my daughter who works for a group of eye specialists. He went in, the doctor examined him. He asked my husband if he had any STD's, my husband laughed and said no. The doctor said my husband had an eye infection in the one eye, that could only be caused by one of 2 things, An STD or Poultry. Husband laughed and said my wife has 15 chickens in the yard. He now has 3 different eye meds to try and clear it up. He is not out there in the chicken coop or run. But he makes the dogs dinner every evening, which he uses the eggs. All we can figure, that perhaps he handled a dirty egg and then touch his eye. Hoping it is not poultry dust causing this, it would be a tough call, choosing my husband or my chickens. LOL, kidding, but that would mean the end of chicken keeping for me.
oh wow.. ummm not sure, but from an STD might be better LOL
I would hate to give up my birds

Chicken dust would more than likely cause allergies rather than an infection. He probably touched something and scratched his eyes before washing his hands. I have been having itchy eyelids for a few months now and every time I clean the coop my arms and scalp start itching. First I thought there were some mites getting on but now I have concluded it's chicken dust. I wear a mask, disposable gloves and protective goggles now while cleaning the coop. A little bit of misting before cleaning also helps. But again no infections. Your doc probably doesn't like chicken :(

Doctor didn't even know we had chickens, until my husband told him. I guess we will see, he has 3 different eye drops that have to be given 4 times a day. Then he returns to the doctor on Friday of the this next week. I told my husband I would find homes for the chickens if it turned out to be a chronic problem and he said no way. He would not let that happen, but I can't let him live with a dry, red, itchy, crusty eye. I have to sleep in the same bed as him, and wake up to that face for the rest of my life, I would rather do it without a crusty red eye looking back at me. I mean I love my chickens, but crusty red eye could cause nightmares. LOL

Make sure you get a second opinion first!!

The only eggs I have found repeatedly are the smaller terracotta colored ones. Ive gotten those 4 days in a row now. If someone else is laying its definitely not consistent yet. As for the EE @cavemanrich and @ChicagoClucker, there are two more ha! Olive is 15 weeks now, and then theres the almost 4 week old Cupcake from Ideal :) One of them should be helpful I hope.

As for the eye thing ouch! I would look for a second opinion too. Its also very sweet he is willing to live with crusty angry eyes so you can keep your chickens. If this is the first time there has been an issue I would be more inclined to think its a freak one time thing.

Separate note, baby girl ducks are getting their quack in and its adorably hilarious.

I would be cool with that variety, @cavemanrich. I just want, eh, variety! Thats the whole point in the EE isnt? I love all those pictures of the rainbow of eggs. Though since my girls are all such different ages, its gonna take a good long while to see it happen.

A weekend of ups & downs. Sold lots of chicks & my fav Spitzhauben Pair. (Yes, my sweet Drumsticks went to live with a very nice couple. We kept one female, but will still need to get the number down by fall.) The sad news is that the chicken number went down by one today. My beloved Bielefelder "Hen Solo" died. The best I can figure is that she got into my garden by jumping the shortest section of fence by the gate. Perhaps she followed my intelligent lightweight athletic hen. Hen Solo probably couldn't find her way out. I do not want chickens in my garden, so I do not have feeders & waterers in there. Bieles don't do well in the heat. Being stuck in direct sunlight on a hot day with no water probably gave her a heart attack. I feel terrible. The fence is suppose to keep the chickens OUT not IN. I found her around 1pm.
