Illinois...

Yes, they can. Mine can go pale when broody, molting, or over heated. As others have mentioned some protein may help her during molt.

Got a lot of molting here too.
This is Cookie's brooder. She's using her maternity leave to molt. At 1st I though she exploded. She only has 5 chicks & the cage was cleaned 2 days ago. All that black is her feathers!!!!

Is that an old pack and play? If so, clever idea.

Normally at 3 wks you can start to guess the gender of a serama. (They mature quickly.) By 4 weeks the males' combs have obvious pink & stand taller. Their combs also start to drop & turn pink.

So here's my 3.5 wk old: (Click image to enlarge)

Is it another female??? I'm not seeing any wattles. Comb is not large - but not flat either. Wattles are very hard to spot - also pale- which is why I'm guessing female for now.

Here's an example of a male at 3.5 weeks:

and at 4.5 weeks:

Tell me what gender you think this gray serama is.

When at first looking at the pictures, based on the 2nd one, i was going to say male. While the comb isnt huge, in that particular picture it looks bigger than Phoe's two babies. The other pictures it looks smaller. Maybe we bit the bullet and got all females?
(I hope so :fl)

As usual, I've been getting more females. (This year it's been about 2:1.) I probably won't be keeping the little gray serama; I'm more curious to see how it feathers out. However, it's a lot easier to find homes for the females.

I didn't see anything obvious pointing to either gender over the weekend. Feel free to share pics. If male, we should see a pink comb & wattles "pop" within the next few days.

I went through and took some pics of the chick inventory today.

Cookie has 3 orps and 2 seramas. So far only the lav looks like it may be male.

Sadly the male laced orp I planned to keep was killed by a hawk last weekend.
RIP sweet boy. :hit

Speaking of hawks, while I was outside taking the chick pics, look who stopped by.
(Look on the fence)

Cookie & her chicks were inside the play yard. The hawk was sitting on top or on the ground next to it. Cookie was screaming. The hawk was bold enough to attempt this while I was outside! When it saw me coming it just flew to the fence. All the birds are OK. I had DS run after it.

I woke up to 3 pipped eggs! Cute hatching moments will be photographed soon!
:wee

It just never gets old for me.
....and speaking of OLD.....
I thought it would be fun to share a birthday / hatch-day with some chicks. It gives me something fun to do today.
