Keep an eye out for sick coons.
Yesterday About 12:45 I was mowing the bottom and a raccoon came from by the poultry yard right towards me. It stopped and sniffed and turned north, then it started going in circles. I left the mower and when I got back with the pistol it was still going in circles. A yearling female about the same size as the male I got this morning...so this is 13 so far.

We had one just like that last month. It wandered around, fell over in seizure, and went unconscious for a while. Woke up & repeated. DD was worried & wanted to help it! Yikes!!!

We can't shoot it and don't have traps, so called the police. They said "private property" so they can't do anything. Officer said it was likely distemper. We thought it would surely die within the hour. Technically it was located between two neighbors' properties. Although not in our yard, I was very afraid to allow my kids outside. My husband offered to bury it for the woman. Poor racoon lived for 48 hours. I really wish someone could have helped end it.

Scary with the kids and dogs worrying about them getting bit...and of course the chickens.
Poor thing, I do feel for them.
But....

@BReeder!
I can't remember exactly how many duck eggs started (8?), but at least one was clear. I have 7 growing and looking good now. I think they're half way - due on the 26th.

Do you want to graft these ducklings on to your broody duck or are you going to let her hatch whatever eggs she's got and brood these incubator ones separately? (If you don't want all the extra ducks, you can always keep the mama broody with golf balls for the next 2 weeks.)

Currently I'm overrun with broody hens. A silkie, 2 seramas, and a giant orp are full broody. Another large orp is also thinking about it.
:barnie
We are going to keep them seperate because we don't know if her mothering skills are great or not.

I have a hatch due Fri morning, so I moved them into my hatcher-incubator last night. Just in time!!! I have one serama hatching right now! (2 other pips) Yikes!

@BReeder! - Next week at this time, we'll be looking for pipped duck eggs!
Yes!!! A few more days just. I think yoy have my cell. Call or text it if you need me to come get the ducklings. I've Ben so busy lately and not getting onto BYC as often as I like.

This is prime time for distemper to be showing up in raccoons. I agree, Faraday, hard to get help to get rid of them. The times I've called it in I've told them that there are children nearby and that prompted animal control.
