Illinois...

Millie is doing a great job with her ceramic eggs. She does get up to eat and drink still but one of her sister-wives very happily sits on the eggs while Millie is away. Now I need to figure out when to stash chicks and a plan.

My initial plan was to go grab chicks from my cousin because I can pick them up in the evening and only have to keep them warm for a couple of hours before it's dark enough to make the switch. They will have spent time in a brooder under lights, drinking and eating with other chicks so it will be fine to hold on to them for a few hours without needing a whole set-up in the house. Problem has set in that when they have chicks available has never worked out to when I can do this. And now they are getting mostly the same kind instead of a variety like we want. They had a huge variety a month ago but the timing on that wasn't right. Now they're getting them in dribbles and mostly all one breed at a time.

Option 2 is order from Meyer. I can pick whatever breed I want so that's a pro. But they arrive after spending 18 hrs in shipping so I would need a brooder set-up so they can warm-up, eat and drink. Plus I'd have to go get them from the post office first thing in the morning and keep them all day until it's dark enough to make the swap. Pro is getting the breeds I want essentially whenever I want, con is that there's more work and set-up on the front end.

I guess option 3 is check out TSC but I called last week and all they had was golden comets. Plus I just hear so many stories of sick chicks or incorrectly sexed chicks from TSC that I worry. But with them being open until 9pm, I could go get them at night and basically pop them right under her.

I am so jealous of the people I see who post things like "OOps! I just went our for feed and came home with 25 babies"

No chance they could order some for you?

This is why I hatch my own, I have never had a broody when chicks were at the store... LOL

They could but I am only looking for 3. I'd just order them myself at that rate. Right now they have a bunch of buff orps. Really what I want is 1 white leghorn and 2 that look different than what we have now -- preferably a Marans and maybe another green layer. But we're open on the other 2 breeds as long as they will look different than the ladies we have. Brendan is insistent that Eowyn must be a Leghorn like Galadriel. I tried to talk him into another breed that's white but he won't have it. 🤣

I wonder how long she'll stay broody if I don't get her some chicks. Meyer usually ships on Mondays and you get them the next morning. But I can't do this Monday because I am taking my oldest to Annapolis Thurs-Sat and don't want to leave my younger 2 with them in case drama unfolds. Although, realistically, I can't imagine too much going wrong except that you know, like everything! LOL!!! The younger 2 are 13 and 15 and very good with handling the house and critters and they've managed chicks in a brooder before just fine. Just envisioning if Millie doesn't accept them or another hen tries to pick one off and there's a fight. Or God-forbid a chick wanders out of the run and a puppy gets her...but in reality, probably none of that will happen? Otherwise I can order for the following week but that's leaving the poor girl broody a long time and with my luck, she'll get sick of it and break and then I'll be brooding in the house and having to introduce them again which defeats the whole purpose of letting her raise chicks.

I have had first timers break when I moved them to another coop
..at 2 wks, but she died before the eggs hatched under another soo something was wrong with her
most will sit for a couple months as I play musical eggs trying to get something to hatch.. which isn't good for the hen.

Poor girl! Probably was something wrong though.

Millie has been sitting for about a week and a half now but she does get up every day to eat and walk around so hopefully she can make it another week if I order for next week. Now to see who has what. I've only ordered from Meyer before since all my others just came from the farm. Anybody have any good reviews on other hatcheries?

Can you legally have ground parrots?

I can but only 4 and of course there's all kinds of permits I neglected to get when building the coop. And you're supposed to pay an annual fee to register them. All the locals I know said not to bother because it just puts you on their radar and just don't get a rooster or piss off your neighbors and you'll be okay. LOL!

So of course, I originally did only get 4.

And then 3 more

And then 5 more...

So obviously I have 4.
