I'm getting the itch. Anyone want to hatch some eggs?

Do you think it will catch up or will it always be small?

I'm not seeing any movement in the other 3 eggs but I am going to leave them until tomorrow night just to be sure. Today is day 23 so by tomorrow if there is nothing I should be safe to pitch them I think.
Mine tended to be smaller but not unhealthy in any way I could tell

Yes, if you see no movement or do not hear cheeping from them they probably are not going to hatch

Guess what??? I have...or rather broody momma Peep...has a baby!!!!! They weren't due to hatch until next weekend?????? I picked these eggs up and I am thinking that the dates on the eggs were mixed up? Peep has one more egg under her that I think will hatch with this baby because when I candled super fast they looked the same in development. I thought the 3rd egg just stopped but now I am thinking it is just earlier in development! YIKES!!!! Guess for now I am just waiting to see if the other egg hatches...but what about egg 3 that is next weekend? Too long for momma to sit..right??? HELP!

Here they are

Congrats!!!!!!!!

I am down to 19 in the bator, full candle tomorrow... Momma hen kicked two eggs from the nest, one she pecked and ate...I didn't see any sign of blood vessels among all the yolk so I am thinking she knew it wasn't fertile??, But the other one had a little tiny chick in it.. It was dead when I opened it and since I had been out there at 10 am and found this at around 11:30 I am thinking it was a quitter and she somehow knew?? Not sure.. Watching her.. Have never dealt with this before with my other broodys, she is young tho and if she doesn't hatch these out its ok, I knew it going in..

LOL.. It gets better! I could just pull a chair up and watch, its so entertaining yet relaxing to watch...

I knew broody Momma 1 was weaning the chicks, confirmed the other day when I watched her walk up to the rooster and squat, verified today by the egg left in her nest :) Now watching 2nd broody momma, she has followed 1st momma around so much that I wondered if she would leave her chick when the other one left hers... Just stood out there watching the flock and was surprised to see 2nd momma with the rooster and a few of the hens but no chick.. Did a quick look around and its hanging with the orphan chicks... Figure she will start laying within a week too..
Did a rooster cull today.. Had a cockerel just coming into his own that I didnt want, and had a Jersey Giant that I did want but didn't like the way he acted with me... In our yard roosters cannot pay me no more mind then I pay them, they must move when I walk through and keep moving.. Jersey Giant moved out of my way, but only out of my way... If I was out sitting on the stump watching everyone he always came within a foot or two of me and just would watch me, if I came to the fence her would come right up on the other side and watch me.. I knew it was coming, that day he would challenge me.. So sadly (or thankfully) he now rest in the fridge.. To bad, he would have made some nice looking babies.. So that leave us with 2 roosters for 28 laying hens...I think it will be ok.. :) Its sure a lot quieter out there and not so much drama... Collected 25 eggs today!!!

Agreed!!! Now I am just dying to know what's happening with the other 2 eggs that are under her
barnie.gif
I think one more will hatch and the other egg was questionable which makes me think now it was a quitter??

How old is your chick that was weaned?

Too bad Mr. nosey rooster!!!! Shoulda known his place...LOL!! Now his place is on the dinner table

LOl... Isn't it the truth, we invest so much time and energy in making sure the hen has all she needs and they wont let us watch the hatch!! Rude I tell ya, just plain rude!! ( there are a total of 8 , 15 were hatched but between cats and hawks....

4 1/2 weeks... It seems early to me, but it isn't really, we are warm enough for them, they are fully integrated into the flock and know where to find food, water and shelter.. She did her job and I am glad they are big enough to be on their own.

He gonna make some great chicken enchilada's I am sure... I have only had three roosters I didn't feel 100% comfortable with so that's not to bad I guess with all the roosters in and out of here.. For the first time in a year we are down to 2... There are 4 more but they are only a month old so we got time..

My day 10 candle didn't go as I had hoped. We got a massive windstorm. Our power was out for a day. The low on my thermometer recorded at 79!
barnie.gif
I was out of town until two hours before our power kicked back on. I didn't get to candle on day 10 which would have been Saturday because I had to help my Mom for health issues. She is OK; it was just a scare, but I stayed the night with her to help calm her nerves. Then I came home to the power outage of about 22 hours...The bator had been doing such a good job at keeping stable, I didn't want to unplug it for the hour & 1/2 drive up to my Mom's house. I am so glad my Mom is alright, but so upset about my poor eggs. I candled them when the power came back on, just to see if I could find any signs of life still, and to inspect them for bad smells or weeping. My little Miracle Egg, #12, showed me movement again! Is it possible that this egg could survive this prolonged dip in temperature? It was slower movement than day 7 candle; but I keep hoping that it will pull through & this will just delay the hatch date. Is there any hope? I thought I saw slight movement in 2 other eggs, but that might have just been wishful thinking. Nothing was obviously dead, No smells or weeping. I saw a lot more veins than day 7 candle, and the bantam assorted egg with the detached air cell seemed to have gained some stability in it; the air cell hardly moved during candle. Has anyone ever had any eggs survive something like this?

Yes there is! I had this happen in my classroom...we lost power overnight and didn't get it back until the next morning and I did have chicks that hatched! So do not give up hope

It may delay their hatch and not sure how the day of their development factors into all of this

Hopefully they all make it!!!

and so glad your mom is ok!!!!
