I'm just not having any luck! Coyote Attack. Neighbors chickens too.

leg hold traps are the quickest way there is a fellow in FL working on a large cage trap that has a door on the side of the trap and on the end it show promise for live trapping yotes most of the time cage traps are the most ineffective way of catching them snares work well here good luck

Luck has nothing to do with it.

Everything likes to eat chicken and there are predators everywhere. Either you don't mind losing a bird now and again or you pen your poultry up safely.

Once a coyote has found a free easy dinner, he will be back. Pens will have to be strong and secure to keep him out. Coyotes are both strong and clever.

Apparently he's been eating my neighbors chickens for weeks now. His chickens are free range with a coop at night, but not locked up. I would have liked to have known about this a long time ago because I WOULDN'T HAVE LET MY CHICKENS OUT TO FREERANGE. The neighbor is almost out of chickens. It was time to build a better run so I could allow my flock more room without worrying too much about being attacked. GRRR.

It's funny to go up to someone and say "Hey I wanted to let you know a coyote has gotten one of your birds and at least 4 of mine" and to get a response that "Oh yea it's been happening for weeks, whatever it is keeps killing mine" Would you not have thought to maybe tell your neighbor who has chickens? It's not like I've been a bad neighbor. *grumble*

Nothing has gotten IN to my run or coop. Yet. I feel like no matter what I do, if they want in, they will get in.

this is true, and the are also excellent diggers, so make sure you either put a strudy bottom screen on your run, dig the wire down a couple of feet or put at least a 3' skirt of heavy mesh around the outside. we had one group that dug under a 2' wide skirt overnight, in hard packed DG. hotwire might also be a help.

might want to ask your neighbor if he's losing chickens every day, or if there's a pattern. we found in one area we'd see the same pack every 3rd night, in another area, every 5 days. seemed they hunted a circuit of sorts.

where we are now, we're situated between 3 separate packs and I hear one or more of them calling every night. in 6 months we haven't lost any birds to coyotes, but we've got them in a metal building on concrete foundation at night. and we've got LGDs which I think help keep the coyotes out of the yard, at least I've never seen any sign of them on the property, but I hear them just the other side of our fence.

We have electric fencing around the exterior of our perimeter fencing, in addition to the coop. The first strand is just inches off the ground and effectively prevents digging. We have a lot of coyotes in our area and have seen our neighbors lose innumerable cats and even a small dog. If you can, you may want to try reinforcing your fences with electric fencing. It's effective and relatively inexpensive. I'm so sorry for your loss.

If anyone catches a coyote in a live trap I will be impressed

The best method I have found is putting a chicken (rooster) in a small wire cage and surround it with leg traps. You can pad the traps so if you catch a dog you can turn it loose. A coyote will not usually chew its leg off if the skin is not broken.

I don't know how much land you have but, when we found out that coyotes lived on our property while it was vacant, we bought donkeys. A guy doing some excavation work for us told us that donkeys hate coyotes and will chase them away. We haven't seen one since nor has their been any evidence. We bought our mammoth jack from a lady who said he spent his days chasing coyotes from her fence line. We added a mini two days later. Here they are sharing pizza with their flock.

Good luck. I am sorry you are going through this.
