I'm just sick, the dog ate my 2 chicks.

I lost so many chickens from my dogs getting past a faulty invisible fence wire, to chickens flying into my dog yard or stray dogs and wild animals killing them. I finally built a chicken run that is fully enclosed and the chickens LOVE! I feel so much better that I have safe chickens now!! These pictures are during the construction phase. The enclosure now has a canvas tarp over 15ft of it. The run is 16’X32’ and we have 10 chickens at the moment. 21B62029-0024-40FA-B689-1998C8A2DDEC.jpeg 9B338D2C-1B85-4A4E-BDAF-67805318CDA6.jpeg 8EB8DF0B-C849-4565-9421-B09DE0190F49.jpeg ADBCB8EA-E8BE-4778-92DD-E2BA50E3E68B.jpeg

Well I came home from work to find nothing in the brooder. The border collie Got in the house, my grandson left the door open on accident. I guess I didn't deserve them, so much for being a chicken mom. I've got 22 in the incubator, it won't happen twice. I'm58, I should know better than To leave them unguarded in a cardboard box hoping To leave them unguarded in a cardboard box hoping a door would keep them safe.
Don’t beat yourself up about it. We have all made mistakes. So sorry this happened to you.

My cages are all fully enclosed. I let the birds out only when I am home to monitor any wildlife activity. I have lost too many to weasels, foxes, etc.

I know it’s hard to not beat yourself up over it but it does happen. I’ve cried and I’ve lost plenty. We have a very heavily protected coop and run. Both fully enclosed for night time. Somehow a raccoon got in one night and tore apart our sweet back silkie. Another time our husky/lab mix got our other tiny black silkie. No more black silkies in our flock. Our youngest daughter didn’t realize she was still out and the dog got her. A hawk has gotten two of our chicks. The List goes on 😩. We have 34 going strong but I know it’s bound to happen again. That’s the chicken life.

sadly, chickens are a learning experience.

Yes, I just keep learning and often it's hard. In an attempt to have a gentle rooster, I have been making a pet out of a 2 month old. Yesterday he was aggressive and wanted to play hard. I think he'll be mean if he decides to be mean and it will have nothing to do with the time of spent with him. I think I'll just let him be a rooster and cross that bridge when I get to it. Time spent with him seems to have been wasted.I did gently pin him down. Time will tell. I have 2 scars in my eyebrows from when I was flogged as a child. I mean rooster won't get to live here.
