To make up for the ones that die

I had an aunt just pass away in Bradenton last week. Actually my step-fathers sister, and I've only talked to her a couple times in the past 10 years since he died, but she was a fun woman. I wish I had kept in touch with her..
It is nice down there this time of year. I wish i had been able to meet my mothers mother. She died at 43, before i was born.

I went there once when I was about 15. I thought it was a lovely area.
So sorry you didn't get to meet your grand mama. 43 is young!

I've never heard of them doing that if you go in the store to buy them. I thought they only did that on mail orders. I got these 2 at Tractor Supply or Orscheln - can't remember which.
Here they've got a big honking sign on the chick corral saying minimum purchase of six chicks.

True, but at the time if someone croaked I'd be sad but chicks normally don't die on me and if one or even two croaked I'd still have enough eggs to get by. All I'm saying is if a person is willing to risk it they ought to let them. :)

She had a hard life. Her hubby was a boozing womanizer. So never home. She was always chopping wood etc. I think the farm life aged her prematurely. She had a really bad headache and went to the doctor. He told her to go home and take aspirin and call him in the morning. She was dead by then. Possible aneurism. She had been dragged by a horse and hit her head, but not sure if it was related.

I almost forgot....I finally got an egg from my 32-week old lavender orp pullet today! :wee
Congrats!

Same here. In Ohio they have a minimum so people don't buy them to torture/ kill them or thinking it's a cute little Easter chick (signs all over about that this time of year) then don't know how to care for it when it gets big. I agree that it should be case by case. Like if you already HAVE chickens, then it's possible you only have space for a couple more, not 6. Although, I had an idiot neighbor (I live in an apt, btw) who bought the 6 chicks and brought them into her apt. I had no clue she had them til she told me! They were about a month old.. she was moving soon, but still... are you kidding me? People be dumb!

That's so terrible. I'd be surprised if it wasn't related. I hate when drs don't take people's complaints seriously. I get that they only have so much time & have to make judgement calls, but if they're going to ask stuff like 'did you hit your head' then maybe they could follow up a bit.

Lol! Signs everywhere here too, it happens every year. If you get technical there's nothing wrong with what I did because I did purchase 6 they never said I had to leave with 6...that was my defense if I got caught. And I was right, none of those died one turned out to be an awful, just plain crazy mean rooster but nobody died.
Congrats!

I don't believe the whole 'you need 6 in case some die' thing for when you get them from the store, otherwise they'd give you extras. When they ship and give you extra, that makes sense, plus, it's for warmth. I don't think what you did was wrong either. I think they have the minimum also to discourage unprepared people from buying them on a whim. Like if you could buy 1 or 2 people would be buying them left and right and they'd be dropped off or set free all over the place. People are horrible. You also have to be 18 to buy chickens. When I was 18 I went to buy some and I didn't have my id so my mom had to buy them. Who knew you would get carded buying chickens?!

I didn't know you got carded for chickens that's funny! TSC is weird they've got that limit but they don't sell a coop big enough to house their limit and only sell a heat bulb big enough to cook their limit...makes no sense but that goes for most stuff. :)

Oh lol! I thought you were serious for the exact same reasons. If I could I'd take them all home because I feel horrible for them. The bigger feed store around here pretty much had their chicks living on poop mountains with a huuuge amount of those having poop mountains on their butts. One little bantam had almost as much poo as chick.:(
I was teasing with my comment about that, I just meant they always look so unhealthy to me now. I was at Rural King the other day, and saw so many pasty butts and horrible looking chicks.
