I'm now into week 2 of being a chicken mom and this morning when I took out one of my 4wk old Dominique's, she walked around and played for awhile then I noticed she was hunched down and basically crawling on the floor scraping it with here feet and sort of ruffling her wings. It was very strange looking! She kinda wobbled around for abit doing that. I thought maybe she went lame or hurt herself or possibly was sick. After I myself then did a "woe is me-what the hell happened-I'm gonna pee myself dance " *panic; breathe, panic* I scooped her up and put her back in the brooder to which she miraculously recovered and started to run around on her two "broken" legs! Hallelujah cured!!!

Sooooooo.....after spazzing out I noticed grit on the carpet; could she have been dust bathing? Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Cherie

Welcome to the first of many panics these great little birds can bring you as they introduce you to the various behaviors they have that look like something is wrong. Yes, what you saw was dust bathing behavior. Wait until you find them laid out on their sides looking like they are dead ...... sunbathing.

I am SO glad I read this. Hopefully this prevents me from running outside, shrieking, because my chickens are "dead".

It won't. They'll pull something else on you once they know you've got one thing figured out!

I've been waiting 'patiently' to see my 6 week old babies dust bathe for the first time... What is the best stuff you can get to put in their run to dust bathe in? I've seen them sun bathing...I looked out the window and saw one on her side, freaked out, nearly tripped down the steps...only for her to get up and run off.

Mini heart attack. LOL! I don't think they are as fragile as I think they are.

LOL!!!!! Ours were rolled over on their sides last weekend!! I was literally running to the pen yelling at my husband (who was working on the coop) that something was wrong! I scared our wee ones half to death yelling like a fool. Poor babies all jumped up and ran to the other corner to get away from the crazy lady yelling.
My husband comment to me was..."we don't have to predator proof this thing...only thing that's going to kill them is you giving them a heart attack!" LOL!!! In my defense they did look like they were dead. Bahahahaha!

LOL too funny, I can't wait to be psychologically abused by my chicks! I kept looking at her and thinking to myself, I've born and raised an infant into a 14 yr old teen and he survived and doing well and fine! Why is it I can't keep a 4 week old chick healthy!! Thanks for making me aware and to think shinanigans first, death throes last :)

Thought of this thread today while I had the flock out for some free time and they took the opportunity to have a nice group dust bathing session

By the time they were done all 17 of them were over there having a grand old time.
