Im sick of people shoving this away it NEEDS to be noted!!!!

Joel Salatin speaks of the chickenness of the chicken, and the pigness of the pig. Animals are "happiest" when allowed to express their natural behaviors. Whether that is emotion or not is probably subjective. In my book, denying a critter the ability to perform basic instinctual behaviors the entire duration of its life is an act of neglect at best, abuse at worst.

Ugg, that might be one of the most misinterpreted teachings of the Bible. No where I have read does the Good Book say animals were put here to serve us; it does say we are to be good stewards of all creation. CAFO's and industrial scale farming are not examples of good stewardship. The verse that states man is to rule over the animals and subdue them, I take to mean humans are the crown jewel of creation, and we should treat the glorious rest of it with care, respect, and the knowledge that we will be held accountable.

Of course chickens have emotions. I don't know where the silly idea originated that only humans have emotions. The centers of the brain that govern emotions are in the older more primitive centers of the brain. What distinguishes us from most other animals is our cerebral cortex not the centers where emotions originate.
As for battery hens, I don'y think they are nearly as miserable as people portray them to be. Unhappy ill cared for animals of whatever species do not produce very well.

(Does a baby human subjected to a unique environment know the environment is unique???? NO, they just eat, drink, poop, and go about their business of surviving....)

For me the quoted statement reaks of arrogance... It makes assumptions I personally am not comfortable making.. Yes other species are different than us... But again so are different cultures, races, religions.

I personally am not a chicken, so I can not say what they feel... I do know they are a fellow flesh and blood creature that lives on the same planet I do..... So I will pay them due respect as with all other living creatures.... Yes I am an omnivore, and I do what I am designed to do, which includes killing and eating other flesh and blood creatures......... I do so humbly, without the excuse of some religion to tell me I am some how superior to other creatures of this planet and it is "OK"....

amyable,
Nice posts!
Your points well taken.......... I respect what you are saying.
One would have to agree misinterpretation is pretty easy to do with verses like:
man is to rule over the animals and subdue them

I am happy that you have a interpretation that works for you.. and respect what Salatin has contributed to the local agriculture movement....

However I take a pass on the "good book".

What you misconstrue as arrogance is merely common sense. I realize that is not so common any more but sense, nonetheless. I'm not a bit arrogant about animals and their purpose on this earth. Nor do I misquote the Bible as saying the animals are "here to serve us". I haven't seen anyone say that on this forum...this is placing words in our mouths.

The Bible states man was given dominion over the animals. Dominion as defined by Webster's is the "rule over or the power to rule". But...Webster's wasn't around when the Bible was being penned, now were they?

Dominion more properly denotes a benevolent leadership, providing and caretaking, a looking after the well-being of the subjects under your care.

Like your chickens....if you picked up and moved tomorrow and wanted to take them with you, would you give them the choice to stay or go? Or would you just move them along with your household? Such arrogance to assume they wish to go with you to a new home!!!

You move them because their care is a responsibility you have assumed and you have deemed it best for them to move with you and that you continue to be their caregiver, provider, flock leader.

When someone states that God gave man power over the animals it is not necessarily the whole picture. You would do well to actually read the Bible and try to understand before you misquote, call names and basically skew everything that comes out of a Christian's mouth.

Yes, chickens do have emotions, i dont understand why people say they dont. i dont under stand why its ok to mistreat a chicken in a battey farm, but when someone mistreates a dog or a cat, youll have the cops knocking at your door.
im NOT saying to mistreat a dog or a cat, im just giving an example.
I've seen videos on youtube on the mistreatment of chickens and it brings a tear to my eye, seeing how they are just in those cages without ever knowing how a bug tastes like, or to take a dust bath.
Ive seen a video on a lady that bought a LIVE chicken in a farmers market and stuffed it in a plastic bag, and tied a knot on the bag and she just walked away like nothing.
i dont understand why youtube even allows these videos to be posted.

Tell them

Maybe chickens don't have human emotions, but they dern sure have feelings. They FEEL fear of predators, they FEEL protective of their young, they FEEL pain when you break their legs in a cage that's too small, they FEEL the life drain out of them along with their blood so that you aren't burdened with FEELING an empty stomach. So suck it up and try FEELING a little compassion you git.

Hmmm... that's not bad for off the cuff.
