I'm so old I Remember when:

If you get to a room and can't remember why you are there, retrace your steps, go back to where the original thought hit you -- if you can remember that much -- and low and behold - you remember what your intention was to begin with. It's like the brain behaves like a broken record and gets stuck or something. I'm sure some psychologist could explain it. Happy to hear I'm not the only one with this issue - happens all the time.

Ever put the milk in a cabinet and a non refridgerated item in the fridge? Next time I misplace my phone, I think I'll look for it there, or perhaps in the oven.

Like when I walk into the bathroom to trim my hangnail. I get there, can't remember why I walked in, decide to go pee, just because I'm there and I'll have to go soon anyway. Then, as I pull up my pants, my hangnail catches and reminds me that that's why I went into the bathroom in the first place.
That's only one step to remembering - you're doing pretty good! It usually takes 4 or 5 or more, and like Bawkbok pointed out, sometimes one just needs to retrace your steps.

My brain moves so fast that by the time I start moving I've gone through several chains of thought, most unrelated to what I was planning to do. But the body keeps moving.
Maybe that's why I've always been clumsy. The communication between brain and body is too slow. Except in an emergency, when the chain of command gets bypassed with a vengeance. And my brain is calculating angles and impacts and the possibility of instant death while I'm double-clutching and stomping the gas.

And I was aware of every moment, all the thoughts and calculations that went into the decision. It was weird. And it happened very slowly, or seemed to.
