There is one payphone near me... and it still works! I used it a few times.

LOTS of cigarette and cigar commercials! "Cigar, cigarette, Tiparillo?" White Owl cigars...

We LOVED those cap guns! I can smell the gunpowder tapes in my mind right now. A lot of kids just pounded the tapes with rocks to make them go off.

How things have changed...one of our neighbors carried a cap pistol in a toy holster at the grocery store so she'd be ready when her kindergartener son (in his beloved cowboy outfit) would sneak around a display and yell, "Draw!" so they could have a "shoot-out". People laughed and thought it was cute. Alas, no way could that be acceptable now. Too many real bad guys with guns in public places...

And-the gum cigarettes.

I wanted to take IA (Industrial Arts, aka Shop) instead of Home Ec. I was told no, girls took Home Ec. And had to wear skirts, though that was changing.

Was able to start wearing pants in High School. Junior year.

I remember when a doctor treated you for everything. Now they send you to a doctor who does feet, one who does toes and a leg doctor. All of which say take a Tylenol if the pain gets so bad you want to die.

I remember a dr. coming to the house to see my sore foot..ankle part. The back part of my foot got rubbed so bad from probably too short a shoe, to the point of a huge blister coming about. The dr took one look and said it was infected pretty bad. He popped that thing, it squirt clear across the room. He said he was glad my mom called him because I needed to be on an ant biotic. Probably penicillin.

True that! I "fell" off a chair outside a couple years back, landed on my right shoulder, and a few months later had to have surgery for a torn rotator cuff.

I say "fell" but in actual fact the stupid chair broke. It was one of those '60's eras kitchen chairs made out of tubular steel and a couple of vinyl cushions and was outside in the go-away trash pile. I should have known it couldn't be trusted. I was using it in place of a step stool or ladder to drive a screw when it went sideways and collapsed. I now have a real step ladder for jobs like that.


Agreed. It taught respect for authority and a little self-discipline. And, oh yes, a touch of humility. None of which ever did anyone any harm.

I rarely spanked my kids. They got grounded..staying home..or grounded from a certain toy. Time out too. Sent to a place in the house, without toys. On the couch for a certain amount of time. Not a nose in the corner like me. They all turned out to be good kids in the community.
