I did not do this in class because the teachers had a paddle. I was also told if I got in trouble in school, I was in trouble at home.

There were kids that didn't seem to mind that paddle so footballs did fly.
I know it made the teachers crazy mad.

Most of the times it seems it was worth it. Putting stuffed animals on the ceiling fan and turning it on to watch them fly off was worth it to 6 year old me.

I remember when cruising for a bruising meant a trip to the principal's office and he had a canoe paddle leaning up in the corner of his office.. He was also the football coach...

I remember when my 5th grade teacher was teaching us measurements like feet and inches in a yard, inches in a foot, etc. The 5th grade recess jocks seemed to never remember that there were 36" in a yard. Mrs. Waters went somewhere and got a stack of yard sticks like they sell at a hardware center. She called them up one by one and ask them the question again. Of coarse they answered it wrong as to to otherwise would mess up their ego. This time when they answered it wrong she took them into the hall and had them been over and whacked them a good one. They came back into the room and tried it with the next. Same result both ways. After all of them had a turn she started with the first one again. Same result. Back outside in the hall and when he bent over she whacked him until the yardstick broke. And yes that was repeated until she ran out of yardsticks. I've often thought about that day and now more often as most of those kids are no longer among the living.
