I'm so old I Remember when:

I'm so old, I remember when changes in the weather didn't make body parts talk to me. And all they do is complain.
When I was really little I remember when my grandma would wring her hands together and tell me a storm was coming. I thought she was magical.

I remember my grandma saying, "My hands ache. I think we'll get some rain." I thought that was so cool! She could forecast the weather!

What went over my head was the crucial word, "ache." Which I totally understand now.

That is also the ONLY time I ever heard this woman complain in ANY way.

No, that would be the early 20th century. It is true that some increases in taxes in some states drove the prices up to try to drive down usage, but it mostly is just inflation. Missouri has the lowest total tax at 36 cents a pack with an average cost of a pack at $4.35. New York the highest tax at $4.38 a pack with the average cost of a pack at $10.45.
That's interesting! Guess I should consider myself lucky I only pay 4.50 a pack.

Kentucky pays a total of $1.42 taxes on a pack. And, they have an average price $5.36 a pack. So, you are paying less per pack than your State's average.

The thing is, though, the states that have a higher cost of living also normally pay higher wages. But, when someone is on a fixed income such as a retiree it can make a big difference. SS pays you the same no matter where you live. Your money will take you a lot further in one of the lower COL states. And, of course taxes can play into this as well. Most states don't tax SS, but a few do.

Another advantage now days are remote workers since they can live in a lower cost of living state but still get the higher wages they might not normally be able to get in that state by working at a brick and mortar within the state. For example: You live in the lower cost of living state of Kentucky, but work remotely for a company based out of very high cost of living California.
