Im so old I remember my grandparents didn’t have a flush toilet, but an incredible deep hole in the ground under the toilet seat. They used old newspapers to wipe the dirt of, if they were short of money.
I remember when my grandparents only had an outdoor toilet (I mean in a shed rather than in the house). I don’t remember if it flushed. I think it did as they were in a city and that sewer system well pre-dates me!
I do remember the excitement when they got their first indoor toilet.

My aunt and uncle with the dairy farm had an outhouse - as well as a kitchen stove that used wood for cooking and heating the main floor. There were vents cut into the ceiling for the warmth to rise to the bedrooms upstairs. Water was supplied by a pump just outside the back porch. They put in indoor plumbing and installed a tub and toilet sometime around when my age went from single to double digits. I'm not for certain when the house was built but my uncle's father who lived with them until he died around 1970 was born there.
