When I lived in South Korea in the late 90s, they had a "Cityphone." This allowed you to connect to a local tower to make calls, but not receive them. You also couldn't jump from tower to tower.

Shortly thereafter, real cell phones took off, maybe after a year or so.

I remember when I got my first pager almost 31 years ago when my oldest son started kindergarten

A friend of mine in college had a pager. I didn't know he volunteered for the Red Cross and was on call much of the time. I only knew he was a poli sci grad student.

I remember thinking that must be a really hard core program if they made their students wear pagers for all those poli sci emergencies!

I got a pager when I joined the fire department at 18. A few years later graduated to a nextel phone. I remember I had the phone during the anthrax scares years ago whenever that was. I was on a hazmat unit at the time and we was getting so many "anthrax" calls dispatch went to the phone for us cause it was too much radio traffic. Cause none of it was actual anthrax, people were just freaking out but we had to go check it out

Why was everyone worried about anthrax? And how would they even know what to look for, to call y'all?
