I'm so old I Remember when:

40 words per minute was impossible, the way those keys tangled. Using a keyboard I do at least 60 wpm. That thing, it was more like 10.

Funny story. When typewriters were first introduced the letters were in alphabetical order. But as speeds increased typing speeds increased also, resulting in more jams. Rather than redesigning the system they put all the letters on random keys so the typists had to hunt for the letters, thus reducing their typing speed.
Another history note: The current set-up is not random. It's designed so that the letters we use most are easy to reach. Less frequently used letters are placed in the furthest and/or most awkward positions. Check out X, Z, and Q. They are at the far left because most typists were right handed, so the left pinky was the weakest finger and wouldn't slow down typing speeds. If they weren't born that way, old school teaching methods beat it into them ... usually with a wooden ruler!
Dang, again! "I'm so old that," ... but I still remember that bit of trivia from PUT (Personal Use Typing) waaaaaaaaaay back in high school!
:D
