Back-in-the-day fashions were confounding. I recall one winter when leg warmers over jeans was a fashion statement, as was corduroy knickers (knee pants, not under pants) with argyle socks. Legs were too hot wearing one, froze wearing the other.

Leg warmers weren't a fashion statement for us. They were necessary to keep from having to change your jeans every time you went out to the barn. We just peeled the snow-covered warmers off and left them by the woodstove to dry for the next trip out to thaw the water barrel. They saved a lot of laundry time!

Our second daughter was around 16 when she had a growth spurt. Her school jeans now were all 4" to short. Money was tight, we just couldn't afford to get her new jeans, but we could afford leg warmers. I bought her every style of leg warmers I could find! She was so proud of those leg warmers. She wasn't a farm kid anymore, she was a "fashion statement"!

It was a weekly Saturday evening event at our house when I was a kid.

I loved the Lawrence Welk show when I was little. My mother, who was a piano major in college, didn't understand why. But I religiously watched it every weekend. That, and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, and the Disney show that came on after.

I heard that the well built up too much pressure and the big safety valve that SHOULD have sealed it didn't work because there was a pipe in the shaft when it happen. (Not arguing. Not my field and you were there.)
I only know about the valves because a friend used to build them.
I helped build some of the Deep Water rigs. Nothing fancy, HVAC contractor in the shipyard.

You're close, but that was after the fact. It was when the underwater welding divers struck an arc, that caused the underwater fireball.

That's when everything else came into play.
