I'm very confused.

Yes, Light Brahmas (they aren't called "White", they're Light -- Columbian, actually, with the black collars and tails (white would be pure white)), Dark Brahmas, and Buff Brahmas (the common hatchery varieties), are all Brahmas.

But if I ordered Light I have the right to expect Light.

If I ordered Dark I have the right to expect Dark.

If I ordered Buff I have the right to expect Dark.

Unless, that is, I checked the box on the order form that allows for substitution of similar breeds (which I wouldn't in most cases). If that box was checked on your order (or if you didn't uncheck it if it's "opt-out" rather than "opt-in" for that particular hatchery), then they do have the right to substitute one kind of Brahma for another.

I don't think I checked that box. Or rather I don't believe murray mcmurray has one of those... 😅. I'm not upset. Just confused.

They don't have an option to say yes or no. I think its actually if you call in they opt you out and if you place on line you're opted in based on personal experience

Oh I didn't know that. Interesting. So even though these birds are both the same age, and look so different, they are the same breed?
Not necessarily. I've had breeds substituted for things I didn't even order something similar of (bantam Columbian Wyandotte instead of bantam blue laced red Cornish comes to mind 😤😒

🤔 That's interesting. Those don't even remotely look alike. I think I will take pictures of the birds side by side, later. The Dark Brahmas have a different body shape to these other chicks. I'll compare them side by side. The dark Brahmas look more dinosaur-ish. Their wings look totally different. Smaller. Different shape. And the other chicks are the same age. 2 weeks.

I dont know about murry mcmurry stock, but i got light brahmas from Meyer hatchery last year that were dark like that too. They ended up just having a lot of black speckles through their white feathers when they feathered out. I thought it might have been an accidental light and dark brahma mix. I ordered another light brahma chick from them this year and its the typical yellow fluffy chick.
