Impacted Crop!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I think our posts crossed. This is the treatment for impacted crop. You can tell if your chicken has an impacted crop by checking the crop first thing in the morning. The crop should empty overnight, so in the morning it should feel empty. If you feel a hard lump, or the crop still feels full, it may be impacted or not emptying properly. If material stays in the crop long enough without emptying, it will become infected and sour smelling. You will smell a sour smell when you open your chicken's beak.

I just re-read your thread and you didn't say why you suspect that he or she has an impacted crop. What are his or her symptoms?

well ive noticed it for about 10 days or so and for some strange reason today i decided to check what was wrong with her crop. so i picked her up and she just nestled up to me while i felt it. She seems perfectly normal. she interacts with the other chickens, she roosts, she eats and drinks fine. sometimes she strays off from the group but returns in like 10-15 minutes. This is why i never inspected the crop area because she seemed to be fine.

OK - I just saw your post #8, which included her symptoms. Sorry, it's been a long day. If you pushed on your hen's crop during the day after she had a lot to eat and drink, what you described may be perfectly normal. The crop is a storage area meant to hold a large amount of food before it moves on to be digested in the gizzard. Try feeling her crop in the morning - you may find that it has emptied and feels normal.

ok i have school and usually wake up at 6:30 so ill wake up earlier to go inspect her at like 6:00. if it does feel empty what does that mean? does it mean there's nothing wrong with her? what if it still is hard/squishy

when my hen had crop problems she was not eating, was losing weight, and had watery droppings. If what you noticed for the past 10 days was that her crop looked large during the day, it may just be because she has a healthy appetite, and she is perfectly normal. You'll be able to tell if it is emptying by feeling it before she eats or drinks in the morning. It should be empty, and there will be a good amount of poop under her roost area. This means she is perfectly fine. Let us know tomorrow. I'm sorry our posts keep crossing

yeah ive never checked her in the morning. so if her crop is emptied in the morning it just means she eats a lot and has a healthy diet??? btw thank you sooo much for your help!!!! if ruby is fine than you just saved her life because i was going to drain her which probably would have killed her!! thanks so much again!!!
