Impacted Crop?

I have a hen with what I think is impacted crop can you help me? I have been massaging. she poops runny sometimes thick.

Welcome, you have come to the right place. I went through a crisis with my hen a week ago and the people here were very helpful.

Is her crop full first thing in the morning?

My hen was egg bound. This prevented her from pooping and so food could not move through her system. What I did was to do a cloacal exam which revealed an egg that was stuck. I put on rubber gloves applied astro glide, ky jelly also works, and gently inserted my index finger into her vent where I could feel the egg. I put more lube and worked it around the egg, gently, you don't want to crack the egg. Then I took small piece of a tums and crushed it and added water and gave it to her with a dropper. The calcium causes the contractions that will help her to lay the stuck egg. Within 15 minutes she laid the egg. It could take up to an hour. If that didn't work they told me to soak her bottom in warm water. Towel her off well after so she doesn't get a chill.

I am sure others here will be more able to tell what is wrong with your girl.

yes her crop is full. well it feels like working tough play dough. she is pooping sometimes runny sometimes regular and sometimes crumbly. there is whole feed in her poop. when I say whole feed I mean small pieces of whole feed not big pieces of corn. she has been sick for about a month with a respritory infection. she is a lot better with that. she is still weak though. she prob lost about 2 or 3 lbs. im not sure if when she started eating better if that messed her crop up or what happen her cop was full yesterday morn and this morn. I know she hadn't eaten anything because while she has been sick she has been sleeping in here at night because she was so weak she couldn't sit on the roost. now we open the back door close to bed time she comes in gets her spot usually in the extra bathroom. were still letting her sleep in until I see she has enough energy to sit on the roost. so now this has come up. im so upset. her sickness has been going on a few days over a month. shes been sleeping in here that long pretty much.

I loved reading this thread. Sorry you had the trouble but I'm glad it worked out and I feel I've learned a lot that could benefit my girls some day.

Good morning. I am sorry your hen is so sick. My advice is to start a new thread since I seem to be the only one getting the emails on this one. Probably because I started it. There are much more knowledgable people on this forum than I that can probably help you as they did me. Good luck.

I think one of my hens has an impacted crop. She was in the nest when I got home acting a little lethargic and like she was trying to lay an egg. She did poop. I brought her in the basement and her crop is big (should be empty, hadn't fed her the evening meal) and kinda hard/squishy. She pooped again in the cage in the house. Kinda runny. Don't see any worms. The crop doesn't smell. I did check her for an egg and didn't feel anything. Felt some particles in there (more solid poop?). She did eat a bit and I got some mineral oil down her. Will keep trying to massage it and see how she does. She's about 1 1/2 years old, Cinnamon Queen.
