Poor hay and oat crop is killing us this year, not only did our hay not do well this year, but nobody else's do either. Hay is $130-140 a ton and as high as $180. Add to this the fact that we sell registered breeding stock. When hay goes up, people reduce their herds instead of expanding. So it's looking difficult to sell all these beautiful bulls and heifers (who stand around and eat more hay). Sorry to make a side note on this thread, this is just a big thing that's been weighing on my mind.

Here's a link describing a bit of digging conducted by another recipient of this NASS material.

http://www.westonaprice.org/federalupdate/aa2007/12jan07.html

On the ground, here in Missouri, I've tried to register our tiny flock-NAIS- (if I don't own a rendering plant - commercial facility of some sort - they can't be bothered). Considering that NAIS funding (federal cash to states) wouldn't buy you three Joint Strike Fighters, and that each state/tribe can pretty much implement program as they see fit (pandering to corporate interests in the neighborhood), what could have been useful `trip line' database available to everyone is being boiled down into a cheap system to insure that U.S. exports of meat, if banned for reason of disease, will be able to recover (regain permits) more quickly. And, other activities (like buying subscriber lists to pad the NASS mailings - see article above) will also be done `shoddily'.

That said, APHIS does some very good things including, for those of you who don't know, a very nice Biosecurity for the Birds calendar every year (order online and use your neighbor's address...), along with DVD's/Posters/etc. All `free'. We still have the 5/06 picture hanging up (excellent photo). If you don't want to order I think you can still download PDF's of calendar and related materials without `giving away the farm'.
By the way, their server is finally up as of this morning.

I just throw `em off by ordering the Vietnamese language version of the chook biosecurity poster and the Hmong DVD...

I'm confused here. I'm for smaller government and keeping the government
out of our lives.

Can someone please tell me how government agencies having this info can
hurt us? If I got the letter I'd just fill it out and send it back. I'd lie about the
amount of chickens since my town only allows 20 and I'm gonna be at 70 by
tommorrow.

Who controls the USDA & why? What could happen if we all filled out and sent
in this form.

Even the Patriot Act doesn't bother me. If someone wants to look at my mail
or listen to me on the phone I don't care. We live in an age where we everything
we do is recorded privately anyways. I don't see the greater evil everyone else
seems to see in it.

I'm asking here, not trying to start a debate. So please no one think I'm supporting
NAIS. I've read a little and just don't see the downside, or upside for that matter.
To me all I see is another government agency trying to justify their funding.

The only things I'm sure of is that I want to reduce the size of the federal government.
Other than that I'm prepared, like many others, to utilize my 2nd Ammendment
rights to protect our Constitution, families, and fellow citizens.

Hi, Chicken members-please forward me your names and addresses so I can send them to this census and make sure everyone gets a 24 page form and no one gets left out.

Ok, I see your point there.

Again, I was just asking. I'm just curious about it, that's all. I wouldn't want to get one.

It all reminds me of the 1930's when Stalin picked the Ukraine bare of every chicken, egg and grain of wheat. The Ukraine starved. And then he did in the Kulaks and created those monsterous communal farms. Then everyone starved. But they all starved equally. Welcome to the land of milk and honey.

PC, that was not aimed at you, I was trying to be funny-no one wants one of those because I haven't received any addresses from any members.

It does urk me that this 24 page form insists that you answer even if you don't own a farm, etc. And it urks me that they want so much information. It's worse than a tax form.
