Incredibly painful heartburn. suggestions the rolaids are not working

When I was pregnant this last time I had the worst heartburn of my life. My midwife had me eat fresh pineapple or in a pinch, drink pineapple juice. She said the bromelade(sp?) in it would kill the burn and boy did it ever. To this day I keep at least a can of pineapple juice around for occasional heartburn. Hope you get to feeling better. I have heard about the vinegar before, but never tried as I was afraid to...lol The baking soda works too, but I have a hard time burping.

I don't have my gallbladder anymore so I know why the others are asking...2 months ago I was getting the same horrible painfull heartburn you were getting and really thought I was having a heart attack. My throat felt purmantly burned from the acid. The doctor told me that the acid coming back up doubled with the distension of the stomach from the gas affects the major nerves in your throat that run right by your heart and that is why the pain is sooooo bad! He also said he was tricked twice by this and checked himself into the hospital to make sure he wasnt having a heart attack! I am currently on Omeprazole which stops the acid production and will probally have to take it forever. The only other thing that worked for me was Pepcid AC complete.

i also get pretty bad acid reflux. i worry about it because my dad has had the acid permanently damage his esophageal sphincter. my favorite remedies are a swig of apple cider vinegar, sauerkraut, or pickles. it seems so counterintuitive, but the vinegar and pickles really help!

I got some tagamet today ( i think thats how it was spelled) I also drank a bit of vinegar water. ( I cannot do it straight) I already take probiotics. I was taking enzymes but ran out. The odd thing is this did not start until I tried cutting some fat out of my diet so I could lose a bit of weight. Then bam. Today it never got bad. I had a tiny bit of acid. I took the tagamet just to be safe cause I did not want the pain again. I never have this. It just came from no where and was intense. A bit freaky. I am going to see a new doctor and see whats going on. I think I found one that is an MD and a bit holistic too. I want that happy medium.

It sounds like something besides hearburn. It sounds more like a gallbladder attack to me. You need that checked out. Under some conditions a gallbladder attack can be fatal. Why are you so attached to your gallbladder anyway? I had mine out when I was 21. Best thing that ever happened. Turned out it had been bothering me since I was 11 but nobody suspects gallstones in a kid of that age. I wasn't fat, either. I don't miss my gallbladder a bit and I can eat anything I want.

HeatherLynn -- hope you are feeling better today!

I just had an awful bout of acid reflux last night, which ended with vomitting.

I've been to the doctor for gall bladder, said nope that's not it and checked for stones/did blood work when I was about 20 years old. When I became pregnant with my first that's when I really had issues with it (pain & vomitting). I was diagnosed by the OBGYN with it. And it did not go away after delivery so I went back to my family doctor and she diagnosed me again with it. It reared it's ugly head with my second pregnancy and didn't go away after. My family doc said it is normal in some women -- I had never heard of it after delivery.

I came to realize that internalizing stress really can bring me into a bad bought of it. So I have done well with reducing stress, don't eat the bad food that used to, don't eat before bed, etc. Then bam, last night it hit me at about 10:00pm!!! I hadn't eaten for about 4 hours. It has been since the pregancy of my second (four years ago) that I've had it this bad. I have been really stressed out and kinda exhausted lately, so it is no surprise. It is very painful!

Just wondering -- my pain is alway up higher. Where does it hurt if you have gall bladder issues? As soon as I throw up, I am relieved. It does not always end with vomitting. Sometimes the pain just shut off. I haven't saw the doc for fours years in regards to acid reflux and she know my symptoms (like vomitting, occasionally). It kinda sounds like the symptoms can be the same. This was absolutely out of the blue last night, but as I said I am stressed/exhausted and haven't been taking care of relieving it. I know I am internalizing it. I have had no regular heartburn, but was classic for my bouts with acid reflux.

I hope you feel better!! It is awful! I am sorry, as I do feel I've hijacked your thread a bit!

I have been feeling better. It seems to have been just a temporary thing. Like I said I never, ever have heartburn. All of a sudden 2 days of severe heartburn just was killing me. The vinegar did the trick. I was feeling a bit ill so my body might have just been off balance or something I have no clue. 2 glasses of vinegar water though ( i can't do it straight so 2 tables spoons in a huge glass of water) and I am back to normal.

As to being attatched to my gallbladder I do not like the idea of un-needed surgery. You might be surprised to find out that there is a greater risk of death having gallbladder surgery than there is having a c-section. I believe the statistics I had looked at was for laproscopic surgery for the gall bladder and it quoted 10% death rate. Thats sorta high for something that I still feel is not valid. I would have to change my diet anyway after the surgery in order to avoid issues so why not just change my diet now and avoid the whole thing. Many get theirs removed and do not get any relief of symptoms and some feel even worse. I have yet to have a doctor give me a valid reason. I have had 1 attack ever and they all feel that is all thats needed for surgery. I disagree. I feel its a warning sign to change my diet, which I did. Not that they have given up their quest to talk me into this surgery, even after a scan showed that I had no gall stones. They just want the money that comes from doing the surgery and my health will not be improved with that sort of medical care. So for now I keep telling them to keep their hands off my gall bladder, its mine and I am not sharing.

I am going to see a new doctor next week and I have higher hopes for a bit more common sense. I finally found an MD who is also a supporter of natural medicines and my insurance will cover it too. I'll mention my 2 days of heartburn and see what she suggests. I imagine she will say cut the stress and change the diet a tad bit more.

As for the symptoms mine was higher up. In the middle and the right side. It Sorta wrapped around the side and I had high back pain. I can promise stress can mess you up more than anything else. Stress is generally the cause of just about every medical issue I have had. I take passion flower so help with anxiety now and I force myself to get 8 hours sleep. If the kids wake me up, then I just make up what sleep I lost by taking an early morning nap while the hubby is still home. The sleep more than anything has helped.

Good to know HeatherLynn. My grandma is dying of pancreatic cancer, that side of my family is nutso (don't usually have to deal with some of them), I have had to do alot extra just on my own because the hubby is really busy with work and a college course (I keep telling myself it's only a couple more weeks), and I can wake up feeling exhausted right now even though I went to bed at a decent hour. I have been working really hard lately on outside projects so I understand being tired. Coffee is my friend at the moment (I allow myself two cups in the morning). I just need to do better at releasing that stress I've been feeling.

yes the pain is high and radiates to the back and I used to make myself throw up so the pain would go away ! I always said i would rather go through labor than that! I had mine taken out in 85 and have been good for years until this past few months..now it feels like it has grown back again or something LOL...I am definately going to try pineapple.
