I went out last night....my buddy did well catching smaller walleye on jigs.....but I was baiting for larger fish .....I did hook a nice one but lost it during the netting.....the hook came out and got Jason in the forehead.

OUCH!    Sorry you lost the fish!  Glad Jason wasn't hurt too bad.

Good morning all!  I have 5 bantam roosters from the Easter EHAL that are starting to crow.  They aren't very loud yet, and we are keeping them inside the coop.  What's the earliest age you'd kill them to eat?  Of the 4 or 5 Spizhauben roos I have, only one is trying to crow.

They were all hanging out together with no problems.  We caght 2 on Saturday and put them in an inside pen.  On Sunday when we grabbed 3 more, when we tried to put them in with the other 2, they tried to kill each other.  So, we dropped the new ones into the bottom pen.  So, 24 hours separation is enough time to remove the "togetherness" acceptance of baby roos.

I am almost 26 years in this, I need exactly 5 minutes yo restart teaching!

read back from the weekend taken care of. Unfortunately had to cut my hatch short. Woke up Sun morning to the most gosh awful smell I think I've ever smelled. Seems as though the chicks that hatched were playing soccer and managed to crack open an egg that shouldn't have made it to lockdown. The smell was horrible. Our bedroom is on the far end of the house from where the incubator was at and I could smell it as soon as I woke up. Hatched out 6 of the 8 EE's and 15 of the 30 cochins. Wish it hadn't ended that way but happy with the 21 chicks that I got. They are cleaned off and in the brooder. Seem to be doing fine. Photos coming shortly. Have to post those from my phone.

OOH that's bad. I don't envy you.

I had a stinky incubator last week but I think I've removed the culprit/s.

Fair enough, but have you tried to raise turkeys or peafowl with chickens? Until one does, it's pretty easy to talk about darwinism. So many people never have a sick bird, ever, then they buy some poults or peachicks and suddenly start losing them to blackhead.

I agree. But I think that's why it isn't recommended to raise different species together.
It isn't even recommended to raise different ages together.

I now have added ducks to my chickens and turkeys. The ducks have a wet room though. The others rarely go in it.

First time hatching cochin's. They were sold as assorted colors, based on initial coloring I think I have mainly buffs, a few black and blue, and a few splash. Not sure what the black body with gray wings will turn out to be? Anybody with cochin here have thoughts. I will hit up the cochin threads later.

I made it to 3 urban farms yesterday during the Sustainable Backyard Tour.
It was enlightening.
There were 48 properties on the tour. No way could I make them all.

I went to the two closest to me and a large green roof with gardens, chickens and bees atop a U-Haul storage warehouse.
I wanted to learn about their substrate membrane and growing medium. I gave them some advice on their chickens. It was hot up there and they didn't have enough shade cloth.
It tied a record for the date at 98F, that roof was hot.


Now I have to drive back into the city to pick up a friend's border collie, my cockerel she adopted and feed and water her parrots.
She broke her hip in 3 places yesterday when I went to take her to lunch. Now she's getting surgery today. I don't know how long I'll have to care for the dog.
Friends are such a burden.

Perhaps that is it. I thought the holes were coming from UV radiation.
