Well no cats around here but don't think I have any of that either. Maybe I need to go towards the natural way

If it's for prevention you'll be fine with DE. Wood ash is also good to add. If you start seeing creepy crawlies, you might add one of those insecticides.

Made it through the storm so so. About 5 trees down, house is good, coop and run are good, shed took on water but is still standing. Backyard is supposed to have a 1 acre pond. Roughly half of my 4 acre property is under water to include the surrounding fields. No power. Just wanted to give a quick update. Could have been alot worse.

Glad you survived. Sounded like a rough one.

Okie, so i wont be getting chickens, well, chicks until next spring but i have the coop designed and measurements all prepared. my sister thinks i am over-reacting, "its just a chicken coop".....

we were originally going to get 6 baby chicks, but until this morning, our township put in the newspaper that we can have up to 10! i was super happy because now instead of having 1 bird for fair (i am also starting 4-H next year:) i can have to birds to show! i am super happy. did i already say that? oh well....lol. i will post the measurements in a minute.

When we first moved here I thought I'd try and at least make it one week on the foods we grew here. Let's just say I'd be dead and most items I raised had to te started from things I bought. Thank God for farmers even though I complain about how they do things. My feeble attempts were ruined by a single hail storm. Now whatcha gonna do, can't eat dirt.
this post reminds me of the Russians during WW II, they ate saw dust to prolong life, finally winter helped defeat the Germans.

That sucks about the fish!

I just want 1 goose to guard our property. ;o I have thi smental image of geese chasing bad guys away... and it tickles me.
We went to a wedding where the photos were being taken at a city park that had geese, the bride was chased by a large gander.

the run itself is around, if my math is correct.. it should be about...182 square feet inside the run, the normal legths and widths are 24 ft long, 12 ft wide, the coop is 6 ft wide and 10 ft long and has around, 60 square feet. i hope that is enough!

Hi All!!  Wow, 6K pages behind!  I hope everyone is happy and healthy!  I'm sure I've missed lots of hatching eggs, birthing of goats and things!  Congrats!

I only had 1 egg hatch out of the dozen I got from my eggs - the roosters were too young, before they were taken out.  I called all the local feed stores and the youngest chicks I found were 3 weeks old.  I had to buy 2. My baby chick and the 2 3 week olds did FINE for 4 days, day 5, I found my baby dead.  I greatly dislike the 2 new babies. :barnie

But, I have a processing question.  We have found tons of videos on how to Kill, De-feather and gut them, but the videos stop.  I want to freeze a bunch.  Do I have to let them sit in the fridge for a few days before I freeze them?   We are boiling one of them for soup.  But, can we throw the others straight into the freezer?

Thanks!

Never tried freezing first. I've always salted and rest first for several days then sealmeal bag for freezing.

 at least I let you out.
I don't drink botted water either... When I've got all I need coming from my own backyard, why spend cash on something I already got?
Scuse me while I laugh.....
