Boy they do zip quick, the orange is the one I saved this morning (Nancy),
the light grey is is the one in the pic above, I am going to call her Bluebell, and the dark grey I will call Jessie. she is from the light blue egg in the above pic. the other eggs should hatch tomorrow.
I have these guys in a basket, in the same brooder as the older chicks. this way they can talk but not get beat up.
Chicks!
Okay - it's eggtopsy time. Eggs 1 & 3 were moving at day 18 but had stopped moving by Day 21. Egg 2 was moving until this morning - Day 23. The problem is obvious - they've failed to absorb their yolks. What might've caused this? I bought the eggs at an auction so I can't comment on the stock quality. Could it have been something wrong with the incubation process
Green Runner, on the desktop version somewhere in the editor you can add a 'spoiler'. Then people can click if they want to see.![]()
Was there any bacteria present?
I have only seen several flakes so far, I am glad you are a bit betterSally, you are a sweetheart for asking..I am doing much better today. That hit me a lot harder than I would have thought, just so close to home, a good friend that just lives down a block from us. Still waiting to see the exact reason why, and why so fast. Not sure when the funeral is yet.
Here are some photos I took today. Not much snow after all, but it's been snowing off and on. Can't see those mountains! That's a good sign. Snowing up there where we need it.
My main coop at the left, we got most of the tarps up, I want one more on the other side. The little coop on the left is a grow out coop and run. Nothing in there right now. Probably later though. (that hose is staying there, having high 40 degree weather coming up. Can use it until it stays in the 30's in the day. Won't be long now.
I'm talking while taking the photos, they can hear me, and start talking. They aren't
sure they want out though, pretty chilly too..that wind really whipped up later. Bad.
My apple tree, not too bad. It's been covered worse with the leaves on. Love this tree.

I cannot tell you, I am a homemade cooler girl. see the 2nd post of the thread for our discussion post links, I would never spend that kind of money for those. ever. and if a turner is needed you can purchase turners and cut them down to fit in the coolers as well, I choose to hand turn eggs as much as possible since I am home and I like keeping eggs horizontal. plus I have a bad habit of stuffing it full of eggs, which you cant do with those brinsea bators. I love that I can do anything I want in my coolers, and have excellent hatch rates. just use a good insulated cooler and a good thermostat, good computer fan, two light bulbs. cost is cheap, easy to make and your set. and you will be amazed that YOU MADE something that creates life. and you can make it with the kids and get them involved too. thats what we did and now my 10 year old soon to be 11 has been breeding her own serama ever since!@sallysunshine

Is this the right model for the Brines incubator?
Have fun with winter prep!! glad you got them moved! let me know how they react today!!We just finished moving the layer flock to their new coop. I'm glad that's over with! Had a few screamers in the group lol I'm sure our new neighbors were a little freaked out. Of course my husband had the cool night vision hat flashlight and nobody flinched or tried to fly off the roost for him. Me and my led were not so stealthy. But we got it done! And now I have LOTS more room for more chickensmy husband built a great brooder for the new babies due this week, and just finished this new insulated coop and fully enclosed run. Tomorrow is winter prep day... Cleaning waterers, feeders etc and moving the Marans juveniles from the grow out coop to their insulated permanent coop. Tomorrow is also day 17 for the Marans in the Brinsea and I will need to get them candled tomorrow night pre-lockdown. Going to be a very busy day ahead!
you know my feelings on them, I would take a homemade over them anydayYou are so lucky!!!! I can't find one under 150 to 200......I want one badly...but I think I am going to work on a homemade!
agreeWhat's so great about them? They only hold 24 eggs..
did you set them probable pip area up? if your humidity is up the only thing you can do is just watch and wait, maybe just write down the times each of those large cells pip in case they get stuck.Countdown until Thursday (Day 21) is on, candled this morning and had a couple small air cells and a couple that looked nice and big. Anything I can do to help out the small air cells at this point? (or assist on hatch day?)
good grief thats wacked for hatching chicksidk the Brinsea was 359.00
yep you can just buy a turner and cut it down or use a scanner and make a horizontal one... lotta options if you research and think out of the box let me know what you come up with!Sally cooler Bater works.. I think it's manual turn...i just want to make mine auto turn..
oz is firm on his thermostat and a bunch of others are as well. I just have no issues with the wafer so I stick with them.I've looked at her cooler bator several times, just to get some ideas for future plans. It looks like it has worked out good for her. I think the only thing that would improve it would be electronic controls. It's still in the early stages, but I'm really loving the stability of this digital thermometer with proportional heating. Since I fired it up this morning, the temp has only fluctuated .4F (+2 and -2), and it went low or high for merely a few seconds. While my wife was cooking supper in the next room, which heated the house a few degrees and raised the humidity a good bit, the temp in the bator never raised above .2F. I know... I'm getting a little too excited about this gizmo. I'll know much better how it performs in another 19 days or so.
7 for 7 GO CHICKIES!!!!!!This is my first incubator and 2nd hatch only but after reading many others' horror stories about extreme fluctuating temps or the length of time it takes to restabilize, these are things I rarely or have never had to deal with on this machine... So I feel it's a pretty good machine and would totally recommend it... Also another note, I have 7/7 pips for the first batch of my staggered hatch! Here's hoping they all make it out ok.
Edited to add: oh yeah, and limit of 24 is also good to prevent too much chicken math! At least that's why I chose this one.![]()
I cant see your air cell mark sorry even enlarged and zoom
