There have been some delays to my work on my MacGyver Bator. I read through the 200 posts since my last update and will try to get something a little better written to send to y'all by the end of the week. I'm excited about the microwave turner "nest" for the eggs and the large viewing area from using an aquarium.
Quick question Sally and coolerbator makers: I read the instructions and must have missed it, but what about ventilation? The entire bottom of my Bator is sealed. The lid has a 1/4 inch gap for cords to travel through and a 1/2 inch hole in the corner for more cords. I can cover any or all of this with insulated blankets or foam or not. Is there anything that says how much ventilation is needed or best? My borrowed LG had holes in top and bottom.

Everybody get hand and boot warmers like I did!

My power out eggs I wasn't really going to hold my breath for

2 more hatched last night I only have these 4 eggs left and they all have a pip.

So 4 in pip.10 hatched total so far. 17 were set, and mom has the other 3 due on Sat. when she clears her hatch, hopefully 100%

I think it's a 10 gallon. The dimensions of the top are 19 x 10 or so.

Does this show up well?

EGGTOPSY REMINDERS FOR EVERYONE

For us to help see what may have gone wrong with the hatch/chick/embryo we would have had to see the aircell marked at least day 18, then before you open up the egg candle again and mark it with a different color. FOLLOW THE ASSIST ARTICLE just in case its alive, If the float test shows the chick is dead, Start by taking the top off the egg as in the assist article, take pics as you go. Take a pic of the membrane over the chick. make sure their is no movement of the chick, wet the membrane get another pic see if you see its beak, open membrane take another pic and see if chick is in the correct position to hatch. see aviagen link for positions and break outs. Head underwing or head down. there is alot that could have gone wrong that can be detected from all of these things. is the chick big and wet, is there green jelly in the egg? is their broken yolk in the egg? and so forth. http://www.aviagen.com/assets/Tech_...os/05HowTo5-BreakOutandAnalyseHatchDebris.pdf

The nest side.

The hen side.

This is a fun challenge. No eggs have been harmed in this process. I can't say the same for my last LG experience. I'm pretty determined to get this working like an incubator with lots of recycling of materials. I spent money on a timer, thermostat, a few Mylar thermal blankets (which I only needed part of one so the rest are still my emergency stash), and thermometers/hygrometers.
