I know right! My cat gave birth to kittens last year. Its an agonizing wait! As soon as those eyes and ears open, their personality comes out.

The problem with this owl was, he was grabbing the chickens through the wire. They go around and around stirring the chickens up until one cowers in a corner where they can grab them. He was also jumping around on top of my peafowl flight cage like a trampoline making the peafowl and Guineas scream all night.

Yes, that would definitely be a problem. My birds go in the coop at night, and the pop door goes down. Even if something made it through the wire, they aren't getting into the coop.

Just a suggestion, but putting some 1/2" - 1" construction wire around the lower part of the pen would prevent the owl from getting to them even if they were against the fence.

Yes, your absolutely right. I have it on some pens but not all of them yet. Because of our normally good weather, we don't have real closed in coops. Although it would be nice for safety. Our chicken coops as well as horse stalls...are three sided. Overheating is more the issue with closed buildings here. Maybe I can get more done before having owl trouble again. I found another mistake also. We hadn't put a low enough perch in one of the d'Uccle pens, and one of the hens that got caught was rather plump and I think she had trouble getting up to the roost and nest boxes fast enough. I feel awful about her. Another one in that pen had a talon put through her face. We have now secured around that pen better.

From someone who breeds them over in western Washington. She had them listed on CL. She actually gave me that one for free, I responded to her ad about marans. I bought 3 marans and got a ameraucana as a bonus. And 2 of the marans ended up being roosters
