On as a totally uniformed person reading a ton to get ready for my first attempt with the New Years hatch any advice?
Second, I gather it is bad, but I haven't found anywhere here why you can't help a pipped chick that seems to not finish hatching. So is it attachment related?
What have you learned about incubation so far?
learned that you need more than one thermometer and hygro?
and to calibrate them?
that you need to not use humidity as a set number, that you use it as a tool to get the proper weight loss?
how important turning is?

there are many things to learn.... where you want to start? what bator are you using? fan or no fan? what temp are you running it?

as far as pipping, there is a fine line here, one that comes with experience.... I have an assisted hatch guide... the reason I wrote it is because most first time hatchers get too antsy and kill chicks by stress and picking at pips thinking their chicks are dying during the resting stage from external pip stage to the final zipping stage. Some of us that breed will not help our chicks at all...

I noticed she started eating misc stuff out in the yard, sometimes pcs of shale, and grass weeds who the heck knows what she eats now... I assume meds make her do it?
The hunger makes her do it. Dozer will still eat pine shavings if I let him in the garage with the baby brooder. As well pine cones, the little ones. Annoying as all heck because his body says he is starving even tho he is truly not. He's almost had a couple of times where what he ate nearly caused an impaction, but was able to puke/pass it before surgery.

Hope your girl doesn't have any issues with that.

Have you found a good place to work? do you have to apprentice for a while?

parents are heading over for lunch soon

this back and forth to laptop is driving me insane as I am getting ready for them, so I will check back in on hatch's and on the responses just after our lunch!
