I think I missed it Joey, could you post it again?
I think I might get in trouble if I do that again...

Guys i wont be doing the EHAL.
Doooo Itttttt. I'm getting a new bator in the next few days and I'm waiting for the EHAL to use it.

Sally im thinking of getting another thermometer. Is it better to have 2(excluding the batorthermo)?
Always good to have several. I have a cheap ZooMed that works well. Only reads .1 degree off.

Good afternoon all. Nothing from my silkies. I flot tested them, 3 moved, but 3 no signs of life. I have to say it's the new incuview bator. It's holding Temps and humidity, but 1 egg out of 26 has hatched?

I'm going to buy another 'bator. Hoverbator? Brinsea? What's the best one to buy for no more than 40 eggs at a time?

You can fit way more than 40 in a Hovabator. I should know. I fit around 70 into mine the year I got it.

Phil, it's Alaskan's fault.

Long time no see, Sour.

Why were we talking about Daytona? Did someone hear I'm going to visit my MIL?

You do and I'll smack you RIGHT through that screen.

You can make it up to me though... I have those huge air cells at 14 days, and you (and Sally) advised putting humidity up to 50% and rechecking in a couple days. I rechecked, and there was minimal increase in air cells. So does that mean leaving it at 50% until lock down is good?

(Help me and I'll forgive you...)

Okay, but only because I owe you...

50% was to keep the air cells from growing. Mission accomplished. However, for lockdown you'll need at least 60% RH to soften the membrane and make it easier for the chicks to zip. Once the chicks move into hatching position, their metabolism is going to skyrocket, and the moisture loss in the egg is going to speed up. You need to keep it high to compensate for this.

Edit: I read it too fast, and was in a hurry to get forgiven. The answer is yes... keep it at 50% until lockdown. Then crank it up. Sorry....

Wow! I didn't know that myself. I thought the larger AC was so the chick would have more air once it pipped into it; never considered the softening of the membrane

Ant's air cells were too big too early. Had to slow the growth on them so the chicks would have enough room to move into hatching positions. Too little humidity when the chick pips/zips will make the membrane tough. If you've ever pulled an egg to assist, you'll know that the membrane dries and turns white then brown very quickly. It's drying out and becomes rubbery, which can be nearly impossible for a chick to tear though...
