Sooooo.....Here's why I haven't been on here in awhile.... Finally got pictures of the darn cat. Bad part is, I'm not working fast enough to keep ahead of this problem and he tore up Tobin's porcelain d'Uccle pen and ate every bird! :( It's taken me awhile to feel like posting this news on here. I off and on have a USDA sniper camping out on a rooftop next to the pens so I can sleep, I have a lion trap set, and I'm trying to get my husband to agree to taking up the offer of an Anatolian to guard at night. The Dobermans are great during the day, but this cat is very wiley and tip toes in when everybody is asleep. I did not hear a thing when he killed Tobin's birds. I think I had gotten too sleep deprived and actually went to sleep with both ears and both eyes closed for a few hours....As it stands now, we caught sight of him a few nights ago, he had been climbing all over one of the Sebright pens..couldn't get a clear shot, so fired anyways just to scare him. I have not seen him since. Don't know how long before he'll be back. That's why I'm opting for a night dog. I need to sleep better and worry less. Can't watch all the time and can't watch the entire ranch. That's what I've been doing! Also husband goes for radiation treatments every other day, but will be done with that next week. I am trying terribly to find some replacement d'Uccles for Tobin....We will be getting some eggs from wonderful people who bought and hatched eggs from our birds. So eventually he will have some of his own bloodlines back. And one egg from the dead birds is in the incubator. They had just started laying and that' was the first fertile egg....If anybody knows any adults for sale please let me know. :hugs to all
I feel very sorry for your chickens and for you and your family that have to live near this predator, but this cat is magnificent! It is so pretty! And in my point if view As a zoologist it will a big loss to shoot it! I think that a good fence and a good guarding dog will keep it away! I have made my reserch in a big zoological center here, and one day came there a cattel herder from the nord that had have a woulf problem, he took some Lion scat and urine from the nigat pen of the lion. He smird the stuff near the cattel ranch, and no woolfe ever came back! So if you can do it also it will keep it away! Near san diego ther is a big zoological center! You can try this method! Woolfe urin, grizzly urine will do to!

Human urine is purported to work as well. Although this cat knows free meals are to be had here and it might take a little more to dissuade him/her.

Oh sweetie! So many hugs that's terrible! Is there no one one your local thread or maybe the people who just bought your other birds with a separate 'bator for you to use? I'm so sorry you have to go through this. :hugs :hugs  I'm keeping your other eggies in my thoughts and prayers. :hugs

Is the room you have your bator in experiences any big fluctuations in temperature? Always candle when you're putting your eggs into lock down to see where the dip is. *hugs I hope your next hatch goes better.

The bedroom I have my bators in is a constant, steady 70 degrees. Thanks, i always candle just before lockdown; yes, i will put AC up.

I would try it first! Humen urine is less afective because we don't communicate with feromons as many animal, especially cats, do! So Lion is much better than human! And when it undersand that ther is a bigger predetor there it will deter it.

Agree just that lion is harder to come by. I think some sporting stores sell different scents to help with deer maybe they would have lion or know of a place to get some. Could always look on line.

I have built my cages so that raccoon or skunk would have a hard time getting in but I know that a larger animal could get in.

Thank you for the thoughts. I have worked as a behaviorist and wildlife research associate. The San Diego zoo knows me well. I agree with you on all counts. It would be fairly impossible for me to put up a lion proof fence or get enough bear urine to go around 200 acres. I think it will be more feasible to get a nocturnal dog. The times I have had large outdoor dogs, I had no problems at all. Somebody is loaning to me, with the option to keep, an Anatolian/Pyrenees dog. I will have to do some training so that she learns to not worry about predators that are a mile away, and to just stay close by. I have high hopes for her. She gets here Tuesday. I'm just racing the cat now. If he can just behave long enough for me to get the dog I'll be doing good.

Yeah, same here. Most of my chicken pens are inside what used to be coyote, wolf and bobcat pens. So, they're mostly pretty safe from almost everything. It's the tops of the pens that are not strong enough because I put lighter weight wire over the tops. The other problem has been that the lion is climbing around on the pens, trying to get in and it scares everybody to death so they thrash around and get hurt.

Good night everyone.

Good night!

Yes, they really are!!! A couple seem "weak", but I may be being paranoid. They are the same super friendly chicks that I've experienced before in NNs (esp. compared to the CLs who think that I'm going to eat them). They are confident and curious and love to run up to you in a brooder - and in the incubator, they orient to my face and come to the edge of the lid to try to get to me. Very very adorable...

With the genetic permutations, possibilities are NN (few feathers), Nn (more feathers than NN, but still naked necked), and nn (fully feathered chick, like any other chick). Of the six that have hatched, five are either NN or Nn (haven't gotten a close enough look and count yet). One is a nn - fully feathered Aloha chicken.

Number 7 is zipping right now. Here's hoping for another NN!!!! :fl

Congratulations! I will look forward to seeing them. I had a nn (clb x Nn) in the group I just got rid of with ms. She was a beautiful mixed brown and I was looking forward to green eggs.
