Popping in here for a bit during dinner before I go back to work. Busy busy busy day.
@Ur-ur-ur-urrr , that is super impressive - I keep looking at it and wishing I could do that. I am still learning construction for chickens, and tend to make frustrating or ugly mistakes (at least they bug me - I don't think the chickens care...)
Fire, likewise impressed, and can't wait to see how it evolves and turns out. (Cute pups!)
Quote: I need to go to Walmart, STAT! Already ordered a mess of the horizontal nipples after you shared your waterer earlier.
@Sally Sunshine Thanks for that update post, I didn't realize they were going to pull the OTC antibiotics this Dec!!
Totally running to TSC/Big R this week when we get paid to grab some!
PS... How long is their shelf life?? LOL
The expiration dates should be on all the packages, so at least until that's up (possibly longer). When I did my stock-up run, I just bought the stuff with the longest out date - some in 2018, others in 2020. I may make another run later in the year for some stuff I didn't get (and to see if there are longer outdates). I'm mostly focused on making sure I have wormers.
My four remaining eggs are still unzipped, and the chirper stopped chirping. I candled, and while the large saddled air cells make it really hard to tell what's going on, there's one I'm pretty sure is dead, two I can't figure out, and the chirper definitely has an internal pip, but is not moving or responding to tapping, so could be dead. Air cell was fixed, so I put it on it's side internal pip up (thinking that might help, nothing to lose, really). Leaving all in the incubator until I'm home from work tomorrow, then I'm pulling the plug that evening, I think (not going to assist any that can't externally pip at this point). Tomorrow is day 24. The seven in the brooder seem to be doing well (from what I saw popping in to check on them from time to time). CLs were jumpy today (freaked out every time I came in, no good reason), and are back to sleeping under the Mama Heating Pad (it's not cold - but I did turn it down) - I think they needed reassurance tonight for some reason. Maybe it freaks them out to have the other chicks in the same room but a different brooder... Who knows - crazy chicks.
I spent most of today working on finishing up pinning down the bottom of the Naked Neck paddock fence, festooning it with overhead surveyor tape (against hawks - they also have some big fallen branches in there to hide amongst), and working on the new paddocks for the others - I am trying to set up at least two areas for each ranging group, so I can alternate and let the ground/vegetation recover, per my reading on paddock management. I also did lots and lots of weekend-type chicken chores (washed all waterers out with soap, topped off everyone's food after dumping out fines, some bedding and poop tray refresh (sweet PDZ). Ran to the feed store and
TSC. Usual stuff. Worked on lectures in between, but not enough - I'm so tired, but I gotta finish those. So I'm going to do that now. Might pop in occasionally as a break, but otherwise, see you guys some time tomorrow!
