Okey dokey.... Was reading and had a thought..... I saw one of the reasons not to candle too much was bacterial infection. Now, that is probably so- but how come a broody doesn't have complete failures with having skin and hay and poo on the eggs, 24\7? Not disputing that it can cause deaths, just curious.

You're average broody (without human intervention) will usually have a hatch rate of under 50%. With artificial incubation human hands (because we have oils in our skin) will remove the protective covering from an egg with constant handling. No protective covering means bad stuff gets in and kills your eggs.

You could make the run out of gravel. Put down a sand base and than gravel on top of that. Would help with drainage and water absorption.
I was thinking some sort of metal version of a PVC drain pipe with the end cap with holes if there is such a thing. ?
