Well, today began early with culling the wry tail NN boy - I had kept putting it off and putting it off, and he hast been too terrible to the girls, but I need to worm the girls in that pen (and wanted to cull before that so I wouldn't have to worry about the withdrawal). It went fine, but it's always a crappy day to start the day. Dry plucked him, which wasn't so bad - I wouldn't do it for any other than NN, I don't think, but it was a lot easier than dealing with heating the water, and I get to keep the skin. He was 16 weeks - I didn't weigh him (I will later), but certainly a better size than if I hadn't waited (esp. since part of the reason the cockerels in that group are being culled are that they aren't large enough to keep for breeding).
He's resting in the fridge, and I'm having waffles and coffee. LOTS of coffee! I did the whole thing BEFORE my morning coffee (because I needed to get it over with early). What is it about coffee that if you don't have it in the morning, you need two or three times as much afterwards?! I need to make another pot...
Benny, I don't want goats as a surrogate for babies - I don't want babies, personally. I want milk. The kids are cute, though.![]()

ME. TOO.Milkbag is the same size but belly is BIG. My farm friend confirmed that the pencil ligaments were soft. I could get her tail to move a bit the last time I checked. I'm thinking if not this week, then early next.
Or probably tomorrow when I'm out of town.![]()

It'll be when you're out of town, for sure!![]()
"Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?!"

Quote: Happy birthday - sorry about the misbehaving rooster. Are you culling him today?
I already feel like I need a nap and it isn't even 9am. Maybe I will take one. Then I think I'll continue the house clean up project - it was nice to wake up to decreased clutter (e.g., I cleared a bunch of books and magazines off of my night stand).

Aren't goats like cows, in that they eventually quit giving milk if they're not bred back?

Looks like a good day here to get things done...... As I sit with my coffee yes MC decaf.
Happy birthday Gotro

Quote: All I can say is, next time I cull I'm putting a bunch of black coffee in a really big mug and leaving it on the counter so I can nuke it in the microwave first thing. I am having the hardest time getting going on the rest of the day - don't even feel like doing the smallest thing.![]()
Yeah, I know that I am a happier person (and heck, a more productive person, work and home) when my house is tidy. I used to have the habits to keep it that way (sorta) but totally got off track. Trying to begin the slow process of restarting them.
I have to say, right now my biggest problem is seeing or walking by something that needs to be put up and not just taking 30 seconds to DO IT NOW. Or just putting junk mail on the coffee table (which gets totally cluttered) instead of taking 10 extra steps to put it in the recycling bin. I've GOT to stop doing that.![]()

I have to say, I'm with you there - I culled the Aloha Naked Necks about a month ago, and they were SO beautiful!!! I wasn't very attached to them because I knew I would have to cull most if not all, and they were too small to add to my NN flock as breeders. I was surprised at how hard and upsetting it was BECAUSE they were so beautiful.Thank you! Thank you, too, MotorcycleChick @BantyChooks for the birthday love. I can honestly say I've never started any birthday with a rooster execution... The deed is done. **** he was still beautiful even lifeless... I might go vomit now.
I am going to have to cull a bunch of really, really beautiful splash, blue, and black copper maran cockerels soon - and I am NOT looking forward to it.![]()
I hope your day gets better.![]()

Quote:Yup! I am not up to keeping a buck, so I will pay for stud services from someone when it's time for the does to be bred again - a lot of folks do that. Kids that aren't doelings that you want to keep can be sold (or kept) as wethers, or failing that, raised for meat.Aren't goats like cows, in that they eventually quit giving milk if they're not bred back?
OK, I'm going to put up some dishes and take some clothes out of the washer. Baby steps...

Hi Dax, you breakfast sounds delicious.Good morning everyone. I am having a nice leisurely breakfast for once (exclude Benny). Fresh raspberries I picked while I was doing chores, and oatmeal made with fresh goats milk. I am so glad I planted raspberries on the south side of the house instead of boring shrubs![]()

Duckling has a chatter phone that really chatters. And rings. And demands!!! It is not for kids under three, and even a 4-year-old would need to be told what the toy is demanding.![]()
Since it would not stop making noise, and Duckling didn't want me to turn it off (she wasn't playing with it. She doesn't like it either!) I had to hide it when she left the room yesterday. So, I hid it in the oven It was such a hot, humid day. I didn't plan on baking anything!
Wanna guess what I remembered after about five minutes of preheating the oven to 400*?!?!![]()
