You can run at a lower lockdown humidity 60-65% but other than that not much you can do. They will usually drowned before absorbing yolk sac and veins. What has your temp been at?

Yes! I did that right, at least. Should I lower the thermometer, though, now that the eggs are lower since they're not in the turner? I hadn't even thought of that til you asked ...

When they are set to hatch, the temperature can actually be lowered. So, there is no need to worry about the temp being the same.

What MC said. You can leave the thermo where it is. Studys have shown that a slightly lower hatching temp can aid in hatching.

I have an EE and a Black Sex Link hen both brooding some eggs in the regular big girl pen. They are about a week into it. I"m thinking of moving them broody box and all into a separate area. Or at least lowering them from their high brooder box to a lower area, so there isn't such a drop.


For the baby that wasn't getting up. I couldn't stand it's crying, so I opened the bator and it was covered in yolk, so was cemented to the shelf liner, another egg and the side of the brooder. I spent way too much time getting him out - so I'm apologizing now to the rest of the unhatched eggs. We spent about 10 minutes under a stream of hot water, trying to get the goop off. I have no idea how to get the egg shell off the side of it's face. I cleaned him as much as possible and tossed him/her back into the hatching brooder. It's body is mostly clean, but it still has a small piece of egg shell stuck to the side of it's face. I'm hoping it will fall off.

Humidity is back up to 70%, so I'm hoping I didn't do too much damage. The Brinsea is nice, but it isn't easy to open it to quickly take out a chick.

I don't know either but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once.

Has anyone tried dry hatching? Considering the batch of eggs in my bator was pretty much a failure I think Humidity played a big role. Is dry hatching easier?

Dry is a nebulous concept. All eggs need a certain amount of weight loss. Dry in one place would be humid in another and vice versa.
Chickens and most other poultry should lose 13% of their weight through water transpiration during incubation.

I'm not sure if "dry" hatching is any easier. I would think it would be more work as you're trying to control the ambient humidity in the location that the bator is vs controlling it in the bator itself. I've never tried it. You can use smaller containers to hold water in your bator instead of using the provided channels. I don't put water in the channels until lockdown. Until then I just use a small container and add water as needed based on what my humidity has been at and what my air cells look like.

The humidity in the bator is 70%. I'm trying to lower it a teeny bit without upsetting everything, but I think I'm done changing it for now. I hate humidity! I even got the temperature right this time, but humidity is ........ bad!
