incubator went up to 103....

Don't get too bummed yet. The embryo's can tolerate up to 24 hours of "going cold". Now, some of them may not hatch, and the ones that do will probably hatch a day later. You may still get a fairly good hatch. Next time this happens, cover the incubator with blankets and put it in a warm spot in the house. :)

we did... but watched the temp go down and down.
then of course, when it came back on it was warmer upstairs than it was in the basement and it looks like it went up to 103-104 for several hours. oh man... this is just ridiculous... i am so bummed for my son!

i had just thrown in some chicken eggs LAST NIGHT! and the power went out...
good grief.

While 24 hours of being cold might be a total loss, a few hours of being over heated might not be as bad as you think. Just hang in there...you will probably still get a few to hatch. Keep us posted. :)

If your temp spikes, why not set it a little lower. Even though i don't have an incubator, people keep commenting everyone does it differently.
well, it is more because the temps here have been CRAZY. one day it's snowing, 3 days later it's 65.
so, it's hard when the temps are so varied, make the spaces in our house less than stable causing minor flux of even 2-3 degrees inside the bator, can be fatal for chicks...

right. that's where i have them. usually VERY consistent. but because of the weather change of 30 degrees, it went off a few.

I have recently just had some quail hatch (yesterday) and their temperature spiked to about 119, for a good few hours, it wasn't until i returned home from hospital that i noticed. They were BURNING hot to touch, but i kept them just in case... Three of them have hatched, and let me tell you...they are big birds compared to the ones that didn't have a temp raise. :)

They were due to hatch today and hatched a day early. So i am glad i didn't throw them out.
