My daughter is determined to make pets out of the two mutt turkeys we hatched, every time she goes to feed them she has to pick them up and pet them..... of course this is the same girl that refers to the 3 week old chicks as velociraptors and is now calling the turkeys t-rexes so....... yeah it should be interesting lol

My RP's like to spend time on the roof of our 2 story farm house. They fly into the trees now that they are leaf free.

They are like cats, that climb. Once they get up there they are afraid to comeback down.
They sound much dumber than ducks, then....

Anyone here raise quail? Any advice? I MAY have a handful of quail eggs coming along with my silkie/showgirl eggs...
i have quail
they are WICKED dusty, and LOVE to have very messy dust-bath parties

Well, I don't have much in the way of suggestions for the best one...although I've heard the HovaBator Genesis is a great model. I have a Farm Innovators (from TSC) that I got about a year ago, but haven't had much luck with my hatches in it, which could be due to user error. I have heard many say the Genesis is the best low-cost styro bator, though. I personally want an Incuview, for maximum visibility when I camp out next to the bator on hatch day (which I do every single time ;)). It mostly comes down to what works for you. Good luck in your search, and with your birds!
FI is junk, i love my old hova with wafer thermo

I am slowly converting the "IMUSTCANDLE" crowd...LOL
you've been hanging out with Banty too much

Ok, guys, I'm losing it. I swear I've gotten at least a dozen new gray hairs in the last 24 hrs. My dang humidity is driving me crazy! I've been trying to keep it around 35% since I candled last night (Day 1 to check fertility- looks like 9 or maybe all 10 are fertile!) And it looked like some air cells were getting too large with it at 25-30%. Only problem- I added just a TINY bit of water and it shot up to 70% (!!!) And stayed there, even after the water was gone. I took off the lid to try and let some escape, but it just went right back up. I don't understand. When I was keeping it at 25-30 it kept going down to about 21-22, I couldn't keep it up, and now all of a sudden it's at 70 and won't come down?! Wtf? This is driving me crazy! Any suggestions?
R2Elk gave you some great info, i totally agree with him

That works?
does your hubby really know breeds?
i have a friend that told her hubby that her sebbies were curly ducks

Thank you. My bantams and (formerly owned) guineas spend/spent a lot of time on the coop roof so I suspect a turkey would do the same.

How are they in terms of intelligence? My only experience with turkeys has been with the BBW, which made snowballs look smart. I realise those are the CX of the turkey world and as such are not a good meter. I need birds that dive for cover when hawks fly over and won't fly over the dog run fence, which is always inhabited by a dog that spends her days lunging at the fence. Most birds so far have learned it's not a good idea to fly over.

Edit: I just saw Jess' post. Never mind.
there is a hole in my 2nd story window screen from a turkey
my turkeys do break up fights, and they are good at alerting to aerial predators

so true!!!

What breed of turkey is that? She is gorgeous!!!

ThankYou! Eve is a Bourbon red. She's my origional lap turkey and was imprinted on us very early on. I have a few more lappers now. Cuddles is a mottled black that openly wants hugged all the time. Sometimes she and Eve disagree over who is allowed the attention lol

And Romeo is my boss tom and very affectionate boy. He gets very jeolous and chases off any other tom if I choose to put them. He'll tolerate the hens getting attention but demands that he gets some also. He's actually coming with me in to town later today to meet the girl scouts and anyone else.

When it comes to gorgeous though, Pebbles is the girl! She has the most iridescent feathers I've ever seen!
