5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

My new hatcher is working great..... I just need to get the humidity up. I put the water in the bottom compartment next to the heater and the water is cold and not evaporation. I might have to add another fan but didn't want to have too much air movement. The heater has a fan already. I added some other water sources with wicks but my wicks don't work great. I don't want to use diapers I want a permanent solution.

Hubby thinks my washcloths are not cotton and that is why they are not WICKING the water. It is hard to find the right kind of sponges but I will keep an eye out for them. I may have to put water in each drawer.....or breakdown and add a fan.

They that built it suggested using the flexwatt UNDER the water pan. I may try that today I have some mounted on backer board and can use a tin pan under the water pan and a brick to hold it off the flexwatt. Today is lockdown and I really want to use this new hatcher NOW.

Vaporizer?

Donna, I have tried to find a good material to replace the official wicks that you get with the sportsman because they are so much money for just s couple of sponges... but truth is i have yet to find a material that works as well as they d, my current solution is to drape paper towels over the top of upright sponges.. still not as good.. ... darn it!!!!

Thanks, I might get them. I might need a fan over the water. It is at 37% and not going up. The shipping was crazy though like $16 for 2 that weigh nothing.

crazy isn't it... i have looked on ebay to see if there are any cheaper but so far nothing....

EEK I just looked at my spreadsheet and i forgot to put the eggs on lockdown this week.. should have been yesterday..
late night scramble to get them set up.. at least this week there are only 3 kinds and my hatching tray is not too full :)

Yesterday should have been lockdown.... no time today so TOMORROW is my last shot to get them in there before they hatch LOL.

I have no idea how many will be hatching I think there are 4 trays so probably less than 120. But still need to use the new hatcher.

good luck getting it going in time.....

btw, in mine the intake fan blows directly onto the sponges..

Remind me what you have?  SBEL will hatch either white or Blue and black with spots, ML Olive Eggers will be Solid Blue or black.  The Blue and White eggs marked ML are SEX LINKS and the pullets will be solid blue or black and the roos will have head spots, Marans will be solid blue or black, Barred Rocks?  All will be barred and blue and black.

YOU NEED TO KEEP THEM SEPARATED AT HATCH you have lots with spot on the heads and some are sex linked others are not.  How are you going to tag them at hatch?

Do you then try and make sure that different colors go into different incubators? I also have a lavender something I think.

I candled on day 14 and only have 3 clears. Most we moving around happily. The Maran eggs are to dark to see chicks, but they are doing something in there.

Anyone want to explain lockdown? I know they go in there on day 18. I have to put the humidity up at 70%, but what about the temperature?

Temp is the same. Just humidity is different..... and don't open the bator. I don't have them in different incubators I use baskets to keep them separated at hatch. You could make some out of needle point canvas. I used that for dividers but you could sew some together too. If you can sew you could make some of those bags to hatch in out of netting material.
