Incubators Anonymous

well, knock on wood, the incubators getting unplugged hasn't slowed down the coturnix one bit... 22 eggs (of 22) made it to lockdown, and so far I think most of them have hatched.

now to wait on my sfh and blrw to do their thing. (crossing fingers)
i love it when quail hatch.

mine always hatch within an hour or 2 of each other

you end up with bator full of little spring loaded fluff balls

congrats and good luck with the chickens!

My first attempt at quail went into lockdown last night. I put all 14 in and have no idea how they are. I drove myself crazy trying to find a small/strong enough light to candle and all I could ever see was the shell spots! I gave up and figure I'll just find out in a few days. They're Gambel's and I'm really hoping for at least 5.

I'm picking up my eggs Wednesday. 6 cream legbars, 18 blue black splash americauna, 12 coturnix quail. So I did black copper marans last time and candled with my phone flashlight and it was bright enough to see air cells and dark portions but that's it. How well do they compare to the quail and the blue and green eggs as far as ease of candling?

Hatch update - thrilled to say it's looking good for my 10 locked down silkie eggs! Two out, (one last night, one super early this morning), at least 4 pipped and I think at least one wiggler.

I can't see in there very well, and the hatched ones moving makes it hard to confirm wiggling eggs. All are eggs that shipped from Alabama to California. Day 21 begins at about 9:30 p.m. tonight. I ended up lowering the temp about .5 degree at lockdown and bringing humidity up to 60% after I saw the first pip.
Almost the best part is I got my first one to hatch that had a rolling air cell!

I incubated and hatched it standing large end up, no turning for about a week, then just leaned side to side standing up in the Brinsea octo 20 with the rest of the eggs that were on their sides, 3-5 times a day. This batch was incubated at 40-50% humidity throughout, though fell to the 30's once or twice when I was slow adding water. I'm in the high desert at about 4600 feet. We are REALLY dry, almost always very low ambient humidity.

Trying not to get greedy and think all 10 will hatch, but I'm pretty happy so far. How will I get through the next two weeks waiting for the next batch of silkies from the same shipper and the fist of the midget white turkeys to hatch? How could I have let the bator get empty? What a disgrace to hatchaholics everywhere.

Ugh... I understand if I'm excommunicated from this list....
