Indiana 2010 Chickenstock-2011 NEWS!!

Hey Babymakes6 save one of the tote bags for my mom!

I think I'll be able to come and drop/pick some stuff really quick but so far this weekend is looking dimmer and dimmer for me. First Kernals spurrs are infected and now something happen or something got one of my jumbo coturnix hens. I didn't see anything yesterday or this morning then I went outback a few hours ago to get eggs and the jumbo hen was sitting in the box part of the coop with the tip of her beak bleeding, her hen feathers ripped off, one of her toes I think are broken or very swollen, and she might loose an eye because it's bleeding. I'm not sure if something tryed to grab her through the hardwire or another bird got her (maybe the BW?) I checked the cage over- no blood or feathers and checked every bird over- no blood anywhere?! I'm not sure what happened

She's in my room with food and water with a blanket over her cause she looked pretty stressed. I put bactricin sp? oh her head and cleaned her up. I feel really bad for her because she doesn't have a buddy now

I hope she doesn't die

I am no expert but that sounds alot like when one of my chickens were picking on another one and I had to separate them.

At that time it was a roo causing a problem in close quarters, but every case is different.

Would anyone want a BW hen? (i think) I'm not sure if it was her or not but it's better to be safe than sorry... If it IS the roo then hopefully Coopcrazy hasn't culled his others yet but who knows... I feel so sorry for her

She's just sooooo friendly!

AC-that is what happened to one of my hens that was being picked on by the other quail-I never saw them do it, but I think it was the male who was trying to breed.
I am sorry, I hope she makes it.
I will save one of the tote bags for your mom. Does she want the one pictured?

This hasn't happened before. Would the male all of a sudden decide to go physco with breeding on this one hen?

What other patterns do you have?

I think that just about sums up all of us. I've described it to others as a big ole family reunion bbq where you don't know half your relatives anyways. I've been trying to talk more people into coming. So far I'll be coming with my mom and 11yr old niece. My mom and I will be bringing her knitted and crocheted items for sale. She has some truly wonder things. Scarves, hats, and dish rags.

I don't know half the people at my family reunions anyway, so this seems normal to me

Her head is from the other quail, what is your hen to roo ratio? Have they always been together? If you have bobwhites in with the coturnix, it could very well be because of the bobwhites...they are vicious little birds! The beak bleeding is almost certainly from the bobwhite, the head and eye is probably from another coturnix. If there aren't any new birds in the group, then they are too crowded.

Her foot though, I'd say it's probably from the pen. Are they on wire? Do they have any place to get off the wire? All my coturnix have 1/2 of their floor solid, 1/2 wire, so they don't ever have to stand on just wire all the time.

ETA: It doesn't necessarily have to be from the male coturnix, the females will peck each other like that too. But if you have too many males in the pen (ideally you want at least 3 hens per roo, no less than 5 hens per if there are more than one roo in the pen), that would cause it too. I wouldn't worry too much about her, they are tough little birds. Just keep it clean and leave it be, don't put anything on it. But don't put her back with the others until it's healed.

I have 7 coturnix hens and 1 roo and then 1 BW hen I believe. I got them from Coopcrazy about a month ago or so and they have been fine. They have a wooden board to get on if they want to and then a box they can go into if they need to lay and they sleep in there (most of the time). And they have their dusting dish which they get into to.

She seems fine but doesn't want to drink or anything. She's still a fighter if I hold her for to long.
Heres my quail coop if you want to see it:
