Indiana 2010 Chickenstock-2011 NEWS!!

But when is breeding season typically for ducks, in the Spring? I'm not so worried about the interbreeding, I don't plan to hatch the eggs anyway unless I can separate the ducks later and get pures. Then maybe I'll sell the Swede eggs since my hen is so beautiful. But if I can keep them from tearing each other apart, and from tearing my little hens apart, then I plan to. So, would maybe 3 more hens be enough? Man, that's A LOT of ducks for my little kiddie pool! I was already planning to get a bigger one, but maybe I'll need a couple of them now!

Breeding (laying) season for the swedes will probably be from about January thru November, unless you are lucky enough for them to lay all year

Mallards I'm not sure about, since they are a 'wild' species, they might just lay in the spring.

What?! THAT long? That's like a permanent separation! This might mean another talk with the family and some rearranging. Don't need overly amorous ducks in BOTH coops!!!

So, what if I move the two extra drakes into the coop with my big birds and give them each a hen, and then get maybe 2 extra hens? One for each coop. Then I would have 2 drakes and 3 hens to each coop. Is that a tolerable ratio? Could they even all stay together if I have it set up like that? I should have just stuck with my Mallards...

Ok, are you still coming to Chickenstock? I've talked it over with the family and the concensus is that we don't want to get rid of two drakes, instead we want to divide the birds up and put half the flock in with my standards and leave the other half in with my bantams. So, comfortably we think 4 more Swedish hens would work good. 3 to go into the standard coop with the two extra drakes, and 1 to go into the bantam coop with the existing hen and drake because I already have a Mallard pair in the bantam coop. So that would be 2 drakes and 3 hens for each coop. That sound good? If it does, I'd like to try to get 4 hens from you at Chickenstock. How much are you planning to sell them for? I'm kinda on a budget, so I'd like to know in advance how much I have to bring with me.

Also, would anyone be interested in some Marans mixed chicks? I have a bunch due to hatch out in the next 2 days. Here are some that I've already hatched out:

Hey Guys, I have been totally absent from BYC lately, life has been hectic, lots of changes at home here in the south but in my spare time to help reduce stress I have taken up ceramic painting, airbrushing, and glass etching lol sooo I will try to get down to the local ceramic shop this week and pick up some greenware to glaze and have fired to donate as prizes for the 2nd annual Indiana Chicken stock if you would like
