INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Th
Your list sounds pretty good for eggs and kids; those are mostly gentle birds.  A couple of others that I have had experience with are Brahmas (if you want anything that large, but they also come in bantam size); they lay a medium sized light brown egg pretty consistently and are really easy to get along with.  Appenzeller spitzhaubens are another fun, friendly breed.  They also are consistent layers of medium white eggs and are really beautiful to look at.  Both breeds are low maintenance; mine are in outside pens with sheds they can go into, although the AS go in only to lay--they roost on top all winter.

Thank you, I will look them up. I have to keep them in the coop/run with playtime in the garden or they will get eaten by something but those sound interesting too.

Any suggestions as to where I can get some if these this time of year?

Hi everyone! I am in southern Indiana and looking for pullets that are close to laying or hens for sale. I just lost 4 of my 6 girls. We have reinforced our run as something was able to get in and get them. Willing to drive to meet. Thank you!

I have spent the last hour catching up on the thread and I'm just rolling with some of the back and forth comments from Too Fast and Old Salt!

It has been just too hot, I know I don't want to be outside for long, I can't imagine how my chickens and turkeys feel. I'm doing everything I can to keep them comfortable, fresh fruit and all..so of course I'm seeing interesting waste deposits all over the back yard.

I'm still waiting on the first egg from my girls, but who wants to push those out in this heat! They would rather just flop around in the dust!

I have some younger birds in another run and they have become little Houdini's jumping out when I have the door open. I just LOVE chasing scared little chickens!!! And some does the dog (Australian Shepherd ((pregnant in this heat)) - really using her herding skills now).

I'm picking up some Bantam Cochins tomorrow as my birthday present to myself. All I wanted was chickens! So I will get to spend some time dealing with quarantine and introduction!

***And welcome to the new Southern Indiana people!!

LOL if you miss a day its as much as 10 pages

Mine really appreciated the rain today. now its a big muddy mess. And happy birthday!

I forgot who talked about fermenting feed and a demo at the Poultry Fest. My memory has been bad for ...... I don't remember how long. The '60's were fun, I think.

Anyhow, I did a little research and found a couple of sites that dealt with the whole deal.

From a pure, natural viewpoint:

From a practical "Awww heck, let's just haul off and do it" viewpoint:

It was several of us, I will be doing a demo. The 2nd link is where I learned it! I started it last august, been going ever since.
The first article gives the many reasons to do it.
Oh, and have found out, quail like it too!

My whole flock is about 5 months old. So somewhere in there. Thanks!
Quote: Will you be at our chickenfest? we are pretty far away. It looks like I have a few wyandotte that are between 6-8 weeks, it may be better if they are younger than your shyer girls.
The EE I have are very hard to tell until they get around 5 months. so far all I have of them are roos!

If I could get DH to let me have them, I still would keep a few. They have a very calm nature. You have a beautiful collection!

Seems like the roos show a strong contrast coloring around their hackles. I am going to start making guesses earlier on and see if I can get it right using bands. (If we ever get flocks split up again!)
