INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Bradselig - the silkies are adorable. This is my first year to have them. One of my girls started laying 3 weeks ago and has not missed a day. I wonder when that will let up... They aren't supposed to be great layers,
right?

Old salt- I love that you quarantined your bird for 47 miles. Made me literally laugh out loud. I hope you feel better. Summer colds are the worst.

Glad you guys had fun yesterday! I'm
Sorry I missed it! I was putting together a fall order from the hatchery on my break in the office today. That way i'd have new layers first thing in the spring, right? And I really want buff Brahma hens. I have a problem.

Will you people PLEASE STOP reposting these photos of Julie's new coop. Every time I see it, I drool on my keyboard. If you keep this up, I'm gonna have to buy a new laptop.

John

I took 4 Buff Orpingtons to the Great Poultry Fest of 2013. Only three advanced to the Happy Peck-and-Scratch Grounds in the Sky.

When I got home, I tossed the survivor over the chicken yard fence. All the other roosters apparently considered him to be an interloper and attacked en masse. I finally intervened with a few feigned kicks to move the attackers away. Being a bird-brained chicken, he went around me and back in the melee. He eventually escaped into the coop after about 15 minutes of this madness.

Today everything seems back to normal. Crazy critters.

On the way home I picked up a 4 month old Jersey Black Giant rooster from Craigs List to go with my 4 3-mo JBG pullets. I quarantined him for 47 miles. Put him in the coop so he would know where to roost. He ventured out and was immediately attacked by the mob (4 4-mo Buff Orpington roos). He beat a hasty retreat to the coop. He roosted with the youngsters. And seems fine today.

Guess I'm gonna have to thin the herd pretty soon. Maybe tomorrow. Too sick today, plus have honey-dew projects for today.

John

I laughed out loud too! And yes summer colds are the worst. I have allergies and get colds and have uproars all the time,I probably wouldnt if I would take allergra like I am suppose to, but I dont see that happening lol.

julie0477~ The coop looks amazing! Great job and I'm sure the chickens will be thrilled with it.
I love having faces to go with names and the best part is that no one looks like an ax murderer! I feel like at some point we need to have a "this is me" post to get to know each other a little better.

^^^above quote I'm not sure who it came from. But from the way John dispatched a few chickens, he may be that person!
Isn't that what you were wearing Sunday?

John
About the gorilla suit? At least I didn't show up with my tinfoil hat like you.

A BIG HUGE thank you to everyone who came to poultry fest and livened up our farm for a day. It was great to meet everyone and talk chickens all day long.

A big thank you to Janet/Jchny2000 and John/Old Salt for helping out to guide the chicken processing learning group. I think we all learned a lot from each other, and hopefully everyone who participated in that learned something to take home. I know I picked up a lot of tips.

I also enjoyed the social/food/coop/house tour part. We really enjoyed showing off our chickens, or was it watching our chickens showing off???? The compliments from everyone on the flock and house are much appreciated. It's been a lot of hard work getting this far, and we hope to continue to improve from here. I got so many ideas and suggestions from talking to everyone about the chickens that I don't even know where to start first on improving my setup. Thanks to all for that too.

For everyone who brought food, thank you! (Vicki - the sausage rolls were delicious. I could've hidden them to eat all myself) And I do have one of Janet's peach pies tucked away for further evaluation.......

And it is so cool now to have some faces to go with names/usernames. Everyone was so friendly that it was easy to see why this is one of the most congenial and cooperative threads on BYC!

It was also neat to see people meeting the new chickens in their lives...or in the case of Jchny...peachicks! I am personally very excited about the addition of two pullets to my flock....a Silver Laced Wyandotte and a Black Jersey Giant. Big thanks to Old Salt for bringing me those. I also had a chance to hold a crate full of Appenzeller Spitzhausen chicks, and all I can say is 'I want some!'.

And I'm glad to hear that Sally was successful in her resurrection of Buster! That roo has a charmed life. He was on the slate for the 'One Bad Day' yesterday, and now he has a new home and harem, with no expiration date. My White Crested Black Polish roo also got snapped up by John from the CIPE group. He also got a permanent reprieve.

And I'm not sure, but I believe M2H and her husband get the prize for farthest travelled! All the way up from Evansville, with a side trip to pick up a delivery for Jchny.

I could go on all day, but thanks again to everyone for coming.

When they plan the Northern Indiana fest, I'll be setting aside time to attend that too....
Yeah it was a great time. If you do it again next year, are you going to look at the schedule for the Brickyard 400 lol. And is that why your name is racinchickens?

Once again, thanks for hosting and I had a great time.

Steve

Kab- that looks like a great silky coup!

Old salt- well I wondered why you seemed so quiet!! Sorry you've got a bug!!

Brad- adorable silkie babies!!!;). And when you do start getting legbars, put me on the list for a couple girls.

Racin- sounds like you need to list "here" what Roos you want to get rid of and what you are looking for.....maybe get some good trades!!

The Great Chicken Fest of 2013 was a huge success, thanks to Patrick & Wade's efforts and remarkable hospitality. Man, can Wade cook!!!!!! Much better than the sack of White Castles I would have provided.

I apologize for not being at all gregarious yesterday. Summer cold/bubonic plague/galloping crud kinda took the edge off. Even with that, I had a remarkable day of bonding with my fellow chicken afflicted brethren/sisteren.

Too Fast - cool car. I wish I had taken the time to give it a real good look over.

Cheryl - thanks for making me a hitman for hire (I murdered a couple of guys for 50 each for her). I am working on the story to go with that statement, but I haven't quite got it polished up for presentation yet. I may enlist Too Fast's help. He suffers some of the same mental derangement that makes me so "special".

Patrick, Wade - kudos on your house, horse barn, utility barn, and poultry facilities. Incredible place for guys with the vision and energy you two have. It takes a lot to impress me, you guys do.

Thanks again, Patrick and Wade.

John
The trunk of our LeMans is very commodius. Even with the top down. It can swallow a couple bodies in the trunk, no problem. Just ask my kids when we go to the Tibbs Drive-In movie theater. ''Yep, just me to see Monsters Inc'' at the pay window. I'll take 25% of your commision.

A great big thanks to Patrick and Wade for the fabulous get-together Sunday!

I learned a lot, offed an extra rooster, saw an impressive house and coops, and most of all, got to meet some great people. And thanks to everyone else who helped us learners.
I hated to have to leave early, but family duties called. When I arrived at my nephew's, they told me that my SIL had commented that I might not feel like eating after an afternoon of slaughter, but my nephew's DW told them, "That's Judy--she'll be fine." Guess I have a bloody reputation!
John, I'm sorry that you weren't up to par. I'm impressed that you were still so active and helpful. About 6 weeks ago the summer cold hit me and all I wanted to do was lie around and feel sorry for myself. (Don't want to scare you, but the cough still comes around, especially in the evening.)

Wow, it looks like everyone had fun at chickenfest this weekend. It was late notice for me ( <-- noob ) and we already had other plans this weekend. I was tempted to break them.

I got a nice surprise for my BD when I came home from work today. Got my first egg! Woohoo!

It is light brown and of course smaller than usual. I was expecting a white egg from one of the white leghorns first but I don't think this one is. The one on the right is from the refrigerator for comparison and I added the k-cup. Still nice to finally get some production.

I have been thinking that I want an EE and saw some 3 months old pullets on Craigs List for $10. Is that a good deal?
