That was the original plan, but after much consideration, the windows are going to be more for ventilation than for sunlight. The glass comes out of them and I will have welded wire over them so they can be left open overnight. That's actually one more window than planned, since they were on clearance for $7 each, so I might put the extra window in the current coop for additional light in there as well. I haven't decided just yet.
ah that's what we did with our windows on the new coop. Welded wire with removable glass. Has worked out great so far. Keep posting pics I can't wait to see the progress!
We're finally making progress on the coop addition! You can see the current coop to the right. The new wing (see what I did there?
) will share that wall with the current coop and have a pop-door leading into the current coop. The structure across the foundation here is going to be the left wall on the addition. It's a little more than 4 feet tall on that side. I'll be laying welded wire fence on the ground inside and then filling it with gravel and sand to keep out diggers while giving the girls a nice dust bath house year round. We've got five windows that were on clearance at Lowes, so there will be lots of ventilation in the summer and lots of sunlight in the winter.
Well I think I may have success with the broody silkie. I moved her in to the tractor AGAIN with six eggs and so far she's stayed. Been a couple of hours anyway. She put all the eggs under her accept for one. I wonder why? I'll move it under her tonight when's she's sleepy. We shall see what tomorrow brings
Arrrrg! Two posts deleted by the stupid phone! I really should get Internet at the house!!
I had an orange tabby that must have been Siamese in another life because he was LOUD! He passed away almost two years ago but his brother is still fat and happy at 15, as long as the food bowl is full that is
Jchny2000- I'm being nosy! What kind of cows are you looking for? I love cattle!! Wish I could post pics from my phone I'd show you the babies we had this spring!
So I just love wasting my time and money! I spent yesterday putting up netting so the girls didn't get out while I was gone all day today and make my neighbor mad. Got it done and locked them in, not two minutes later two of them were out! Turned out my hubby had caught the chicken wire with the weed eater after I told him not to weed eat there and there was a hole in the bottom they were going through! Patched it and everybody stayed unhappily inside the fence today woohoo!
Holsteins, jersey, Guernsey doesn't matter. Crossbreed are fine too, They are meant to feed the family. I want to be completely independent of buying meat at the grocery. My Moms health has improved a great deal since I raise all our poultry, and pork. I won't be keeping a milk cow, that's what my goats are here for, and we can't possibly use all the milk from a cow. I know we can go to the auctions, but it really upsets/infuriates me to see the conditions of some of the animals. Maybe they aren't all that bad, but there was one over in Hamilton county was just horrendous. Fuel prices with our dually and that big engine (454) would kill us to drive up to ft wayne area. Peru area has a few that sell but that's still a long haul, over an hour.
I welcome any tips to find a few
Ugh I know the feeling on containing the birds. I installed netting over my main coop, and of course some of the roos found a way out.
Guess I need to be grateful, someday hopefully the egg/meat flock will not find another escape route. The original run was chain link on the roof, I may have to just do that over the entire run area. some days it feels like all I do is build and repair
Aretha, our 19-week old cream legbar has laid 5 eggs in her first week. We couldn't be more proud of her hard work. The eggs are still small though, so I hope they get bigger soon. Here's a picture of her first 4 eggs, with our last grocery store egg in the carton for comparison.
She's growing into being a very beautiful girl--I'll post some pictures of her when she stands still.
irtehun: Charlie's a very handsome bird. Nicely done!
toofast: Great looking coop! Looks like you've got grass growing in it--How do you keep anything green growing in it?
^^^pginsber, actually there is no grass growing inside the coop/run. No way the chickens would let that happen lol. Just some along the edges. Nice egg collection, don't worry they will get bigger.
jchny~ Your farm description sounds like an idyllic children's story. Instead of photos, you need to record video of the baby goat, mom and "dad" goat, the geese and babies, turkey babies, pea chicks, guinea chicks, etc. etc. etc. I really need to name the Palms! They have joined the main flock, and both have stopped the fence pacing. I think they just felt "left out". You could name your Palms after beaches by Palm Beach: Pompano, Delray, Boca, Boynton, etc. Just a thought.
Here is a pic of one of my frizzle cochin bantam X ameraucana bantam.
Here is my horse stall converted into a breeding pen. Right now It just has some random chickens in it. I still have to get sand, a hanging feeder and a bucket lid to catch dripping water.
Here is the door
there was a gap between where the top of the stall was and the celing
Hanging waterer
The empty space along the wall is where I am going to put a ramp (i will have to cut a hold in the fence and wall also and make a ramp coming down the other side)
Nesting boxes
It looks a lot better in person, espcially with the sand. Bad pics but you get the idea.
And I do not remember if I post this here or not, A pic of my araucana pullet!

GMO is pretty scary. If things continue in the direction they are, we may not know WHAT our chickens are crossed with. FDA may not require they tell us if the legislation is passed.... All I know is I plan to raise all the food I can at home.
Well I'm a little disappointed of how many chicks have hatched. So far only four ( 12 were shipped but one spoiled during shipment and i put two eggs in from my flock and one stopped developing ) but I'm keeping my hopes up more would hatch tomorrow (Day 25). Will post pics tomorrow
Went to lock everyone up tonight and could find my 1 LF chick. She has 2 mommies!! So of course they are both not laying. So I could hear her chirping but could find her. Look for the little butt in the pic!!!
Can Anyone Assist with Mobile Device Issues?
One of our members is having difficulty getting his avatar uploaded to his iPod Touch. I know other members have had problems uploading avatars and photos on their cell phones. There are threads on BYC dealing with those types of problems, but they are like a wild goose chase and some are so outdated (kinda like the term, "wild goose chase.")
Does anyone have any suggestions? It really annoys me that BYC hasn't updated to Responsive Web Design (RWD). jchny2000~ You know you hit a nerve with me when you mentioned horrendous livestock auctions. They need to be reported. Animal cruelty charges have been filed against livestock auctions in other states. Everyone should Google "animal abuse livestock auctions."

Looks great, pipd. Just be sure about the welded wire on the ground. It needs to be very tight to the foundation bricks so the diggers don't just push it away and get in. Hindsight is always perfect, I see something like this and now if I build something similar I'd put the welded wire on the ground before any foundation goes down. To be sure it's safe. Keep up the pictures on your sunroom addition!!
pipd~ Looks like a fortress for your fortunate flock. CCCHICKENS~ My husband's aunt and uncle had a few Great Danes that they loved dearly, but the Great Dane's lifespan is short so they finally decided they couldn't go through having another one. That's one problem with extra large dogs . . . the vet bills are another. My chicken's vet bills are bad enough! jchny~ Your farm description sounds like an idyllic children's story.
