M2H: OMGosh--how cute! Bonbon looks sweet. Is she the only bantam in your flock?
We have a black orp bantam (Peanut) and I think she's the boss of the flock of 7. She's half the size of the Barred Rock and Cuckoo Marans, but chases them away from the treats.

Question on Broodiness:
In a flock of 7 pullets, one CL is very broody. Will she eventually stop on her own? How long does Broodiness last?

Eventually they will quite, correct me if I am wrong, but it usually last somewhere around a month. Unless you can figure out how to break her, but sometimes that evven take 2 weeks to do. (i would just give her eggs)

Good advice. If she is going to be broody give her eggs!
Otherwise I have heard of putting broody hens in wire bottom cages for a week. Seems cruel to me, but apparently it breaks them in a week.

Thank you. I am always excited when I have a broody, i encourage my hens lol. I havent heard of that one before. Some people just go out and keep tossing them off the nest, but that seems like a bad idea to me, becuase then I would think they think they should not go in the hesting box at all anymore and lay on the floor but I could be overthinking it. I dont like putting chickens in wire bottom cages/cages period really, although right noe my OEGBs are in little cage/pens right now.

We don't have any fertilized eggs to give her. Our other birds are just starting to come into lay, and she sits one their eggs, going from nestbox to nestbox.

sounds like she would be a good mom and very determined. I would think she would be starting to quit by now. didnt you just get some isa brown chicks. you could sneaksome under her and see if she takes care of them.

Yeah, an old farmer told me about that. He had some old battery cages he kept just for breaking broodies. Kept them hanging in the barn so they were totally off the ground.

Seems little harsh, just to get them to stop

QUESTION

Why is it that I have had many weeks of 15 - 17 eggs a day, then all of a sudden I had 10, the next day I only had 5, and the next day (today) I only got 4? What am I doing wrong?

It is not a painful thing for the hen. At this point it is what I would recommend. Since the hen has been broody for almost a month already I'm not sure it would last another month. From what I have read they eat and drink less when they are broody and it can be hard on the hen to be broody for too long. But using fertile eggs at the beginning of a hen going broody is the more natural approach.

I know it dosent hurt the hen, I just think it is pointlesss to lock in a cage, they arent hurting anything. Some people make a big deal over eggs, i dont eat eggs so when a hen goes broody I couldnt care less
